Stanford Pulls Away Late Against Oregon State, 80-66
Jan. 5, 2006
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Chris Hernandez scored 10 of his 20 points in the final five minutes in helping Stanford beat Oregon State 80-66 on Thursday night.
Lawrence Hill added 13 points, including a clutch 3-pointer in the final minutes as the Cardinal (5-6, 1-2 Pac-10) beat Oregon State for the 13th straight time at home. Dan Grunfeld scored 14 (making all 10 of his foul shots) and Peter Prowitt added 12.
Chris Stephens scored 16 points to lead the Beavers (7-6, 0-2), who lost their 14th consecutive conference road game. Jason Fontenet had 14 points and Marcel Jones added 11. Stephens made his only free throw to extend his streak to 25 straight.
Oregon State missed its chance to beat the Cardinal two straight for the first time since 1993.
Stanford played without its top player and one of its top reserves. Senior Matt Haryasz, a 6-foot-10 forward and Stanford's leading scorer and rebounder, missed the game with a sprained left ankle he sustained in Saturday's loss at USC. Fred Washington missed his fifth straight with tendinitis in his left knee.
Hill had problems breathing and left Monday's practice early. Tests performed on Tuesday came back negative.
Beavers guard Lamar Hurd exorcised some personal demons against Stanford. The four-year starter at point guard had not made a field goal against the Cardinal since his freshman season and had missed 16 in a row against them until making two of his first three shots on Thursday night. His 2.0 scoring average in six previous games against Stanford was his worst against any Pac-10 team.
Hurd, who started 89 of his first 91 games, came off the bench in six straight before starting against the Cardinal. He's been alternating between both guard spots but assumed a primary role at the point as he has the best assist-to-turnover ratio on the team. He matched his previous season high of four assists in the first half alone.
The teams exchanged the lead several times through most of the second half, and the lead didn't get larger than three points either way until Hernandez hit a 3-pointer to put Stanford up 58-54 with just under five minutes to play. Hernandez hit another 3-pointer 37 seconds later to culminate a 10-0 Cardinal run.
Stanford took control with a 19-3 run.
Oregon State fell behind early but an 18-6 run helped give the Beavers a 31-30 halftime lead.
