Jan. 5, 2006

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State Sun Devil baseball team has been ranked #16 in the Baseball America preseason Top 25. ASU finished last season ranked #6 in the final Baseball America poll thanks to their third place finish at the College World Series. This is the 20th consecutive season the Sun Devils have been ranked in the Baseball America preseason poll every year since 1987, the longest streak in the nation.

The Sun Devils, coming off a 42-25 mark last year, will open the 2006 campaign at Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark with a three-game series against Cal-State Northridge beginning on January 27th. ASU returns 20 lettermen from the 2005 squad, including Baseball America Preseason First Team All-American OF Colin Curtis and LHP Brett Bordes. The Sun Devils will debut the nation's second ranked recruiting class as well, led by LHP/OF Ike Davis and 3B/SS Matt Hall.

Arizona State University is one of four Pac-10 teams ranked in the Top 25. Oregon State (#8), USC (#17) and California (#25) are the others. Defending National Champion Texas is ranked #1. The Sun Devils and Longhorns will meet March 14 in Austin.

The Sun Devils annually play one of the toughest schedules in the nation, and 2006 will be no exception as ASU will play six teams ranked in the Top 25 this season. The Sun Devils will face #8 Oregon State on Feburary 11th in the Coca Cola Classic Tournament in Surprise, Ariz. as well as host the Beavers in a Pac-10 series (May 12-14), face #7 Rice and #19 TCU in the WhataBurger Baseball Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas (Mar. 11-12), as well as play Pac-10 series with #17 USC (Apr. 13-15), #25 Cal (May 26-28).
