Washington State Edges No. 10 Washington, 78-71
Jan. 7, 2006
SEATTLE (AP) - Josh Akognon made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 16 seconds remaining, and Washington State beat No. 10 Washington 78-71 Saturday night for its first win ever over a Top 10 team on the road.
With the score tied at 71, Akognon hit the 3 and then added two clinching free throws to finish with a career-high 27 points for the Cougars, who were 0-52 on the road against Top 10 teams.
Kyle Weaver also set his career-high of 19 for Washington State (9-3, 2-1 Pac-10), which trailed by 13 in the first half yet won for the first time at its cross-state rivals since 1994.
Washington State was without point guard Derrick Low - the only Cougar averaging double figures in scoring, who broke his foot in practice last week.
Brandon Roy scored 27 points for Washington (12-2, 1-2), which lost its second straight Pac-10 game at Hec Edmundson Pavilion after having the nation's longest home winning snapped last weekend by Arizona.
But Roy missed over seven minutes of the second half after getting his fourth foul. During his absence, a one-point Husky lead became a seven-point deficit.
Washington entered the game leading the nation with an average of 91.5 points per game. Washington State was fourth in the country in scoring defense, at 54.1 points per game.
The game ended up being neither up-and-down or slowdown, as supposedly slow-motion Washington State pushed the ball at the surprised Huskies and sought fast breaks when they were available - which was often.
The Cougars scored the first six points of the second half to take their first lead of the game. And when Akognon watched his 3-pointer bounce twice and then go in with 4:25 to go, the Cougars' lead was 69-57.
Roy's first field goal of the second half was a 3-pointer with 4:14 left that left the Huskies trailing 69-60. He then scored four more unanswered points to get Washington back to within 65-60 at the 3:02 mark.
He eventually tied the game at 71 with two free throws and 55.9 seconds remaining. But then came Akognon's finish.
