Jan. 9, 2006
Washington State guard Josh Akognon has been named the U.S. Bank Pacific-10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for January 2 - 8, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Akognon, who hails from Petaluma, Calif., led Washington State to a 78-71 win at then-No. 10 Washington on Sat., Jan. 7. The sophomore posted a career-high 27 points, shooting 6-for-10 from behind the three-point arch.
WSU trailed 29-16 before a 21-4 run over the final six minutes of the first half and first three minutes of the second, which gave the Cougars a 37-33 lead. Akognon nailed a three-pointer with 16 seconds left in the game to break a 71-71 tie, before clinching the win with two free throws. He scored 17 of his points in the second half.
Saturday's victory marks the Cougars' first on the road over a top-10 team in 53 games. The school broke it's 34-game losing streak overall against top-10 teams and broke an 11-game skid at its cross-state rival.
Washington State (9-3, 2-1 Pac-10) will travel to Southern California this week, taking on UCLA on Thurs., Jan. 12 and USC on Sat., Jan. 14.
This is the first weekly honor for Akognon and Washington State's 16th Player of the Week all-time.
