Jan. 10, 2006
This Week --
Arizona State University's gymnastics team opens the 2006 season with a road date at Boise State, on Friday, January 13 at 7:30 p.m. PT. The Sun Devils, under 26th-year head coach John Spini, enter a new era of Sun Devil gymnastics with the $2 million John Spini Gymnastics Training Facility on the ASU campus. It is the first time in five years that the squad has trained on campus. Spini looks to lead the Sun Devils to an NCAA regional berth for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons. Spini is currently ASU's longest-tenured head coach, and is tied for second on the all-time Sun Devil head coaching list with long-time track and field mentor Senon 'Baldy' Castillo. Former Sun Devil women's tennis coaching legend Anne Pittman holds the distinction as the longest-tenured ASU head coach in school history at 31 seasons. His regular-season record is now 306-122-2 over 24-plus seasons. His won-loss mark at home is 163-25-1.
ASU In The Rankings --
ASU debuted at No. 14 in the GymInfo rankings, based on the preseason coaches poll released in December. Pac-10 Conference foe UCLA was selected third with 579 votes and three first-place bids. ASU received 293 votes and was neighbored in the standings by No. 9 Stanford (417), No. 13 Oregon State (331), No. 17 Arizona (188) and No. 18 Washington (185).
