CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - An up and down day of results for the No. 18 Arizona State University wrestling team Saturday at the 2006 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals came to a close as the Sun Devils dropped a 24-12 decision to fifth-ranked and fourth-seeded Michigan inside the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The loss, ASU's second in four duals on the day, brought the Sun Devils' record to 6-6 overall on the year and 2-2 in the Duals. On the day, ASU defeated No. 9 Missouri (24-21), loss to No. 1 Oklahoma State (38-3) and defeated No. 13 Northwestern (22-17) before the loss to the Wolverines.

No. 6 Jeremy Mendoza (Sr., Temecula, Calif.) got the team off to a strong start as he reversed his opponent and pinned him in 2:12 for an early 6-0 lead. But, the Wolverines sent a strong line up out on the mats as Adam Hickey (So., Mayfield, Ohio) dropped a 17-4 major decision to No. 13 Mark Moos at 133 before Jason Robbins (Fr., Orlando, Fla.) sustained a 16-1 technical fall loss to No. 5 Josh Churella at 141. From there, No. 6 Eric Tannenbaum took a 4-1 decision over Pat Payne (So., Poway, Calif.) at 149 to push the UM advantage to 12-6.

Needing a win, No. 7 Brian Stith (Jr., Hampton, Va.) won a battle of Top 10 foes at 157 as he took a 6-2 decision over No. 9 Steve Luke to cut into the deficit. But, No. 11 Patrick Pitsch (So., Spanaway, Wash.) ran into his third Top 4 foe of the day at 165, this time dropping a 10-3 decision to No. 1 Ryan Churella. On the day, Pitsch faced No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 19, falling in all four bouts.

UM then won the next two bouts as Jamie Robbins (Jr., Mesa, Ariz.) put up a valiant fight before falling, 6-3, to No. 6 Nick Roy at 174. Then, No. 8 C.B. Dollaway (Sr., Mt. Gilead, Ohio) was dealt his first loss of the season as No. 20 Tyrel Todd stole an 11-4 decision to put the team score out of reach, 21-9.

No. 14 Ryan Bader (Sr., Reno, Nev.) won a hard-fought 4-3 decision over William Breyer at 197 to bring the score to 21-12, but in another rematch at heavyweight, No. 4 Cain Velasquez (Sr., Yuma, Ariz.) dropped a 6-0 decision to No. 3 Greg Wagner. So far this season, Velasquez has lost five bouts: twice to No. 1 Steve Mocco, once to No. 2 Cole Konrad of Minnesota and twice to No. 3 Wagner.

With Michigan and Iowa both winning their consolation bouts, the Sun Devils will now close out their stay in Cedar Falls against the same team they opened with: Missouri.
