Bruch Beats Pade to Advance to Sherwood Cup Finals
Jan. 15, 2006
Freshman Matt Bruch defeated teammate James Pade today in the semifinals of the Sherwood Collegiate Cup at the Sherwood Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. Bruch's 6-4, 6-3 victory puts him in tomorrow's final against Matija Zgaga of Baylor.
A freshman from Lake Forest, Ill., Bruch has won four consecutive matches in this week's Sherwood Cup and has improved his 2006 singles record to 15-2. He is ranked fourth in the nation in singles. Pade, a junior making a return to the Cardinal after redshirting the '05 campaign, won his first three matches at the Sherwood Cup before facing Bruch. As a doubles team, Bruch and Pade advanced to tomorrow's semifinals with an 8-4 win over Geremy Drean and Andrew Eklov of UCLA.
Also in doubles play, the Cardinal's duo of Chris Rasmussen and James Wan won two matches today to advance to tomorrow's semifinals. They beat Chong Wang and Darren Bedart of USC 8-0 in the first round, then won in a walk-over in the second round when an injury forced Baylor's Lars Poerschke and Matija Zgaga to withdraw.
