2006 Tennis Opens With Two Home Matches For No. 5 USC Women

THIS WEEK: The Women of Troy begin the 2006 women's tennis season with a pair of dual matches this week at Marks Stadium, beginning with a face-off against No. 68 UC Irvine at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 19). USC then goes up against No. 57 Long Beach State at 1:30 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 20).

2006 TROJANS: The 2006 USC squad, led by head coach Richard Gallien -- in his 11th season at Troy -- is highlighted by six returning players from last year's team that reached the NCAA Quarterfinals and finished the 2005 season with a No. 7 national ranking. This year, the Trojans boast four newcomers to the roster as USC works toward an 11th straight appearance at the NCAA Tournament. USC finished with 19-4 overall record and went 7-1 in Pac-10 play to finish second in the conference.

ITA RANKING UPDATES: USC enters 2006 ranked No. 5 in the first ITA poll of the year (Jan. 10). Freshman Amanda Fink leads the Women of Troy with a No. 3 ranking. Luana Magnani is tied at No. 69, and Dianne Matias is ranked No. 78 entering the week. Lindsey Nelson was ranked No. 9 in the fall, but did not compete in enough fall competition to receive a ranking entering the 2006 season.

RECENT RESULTS: At the National Collegiate Classic last week, Dianne Matias won the singles title, and Lindsey Nelson and Luana Magnani teamed up to win the doubles championship in Indian Wells, Calif.

USC VS. UC IRVINE: USC has never lost to the Anteaters, boasting a 20-0 all-time record against UC Irvine. The last meeting was in 2004, when the Trojans swept the Anteaters 7-0. This will be the season opener for both teams.

USC VS. LONG BEACH STATE: USC has been flawless against the 49ers, tacking up a 26-0 all-time record against Long Beach State. The last meeting was in 2005, when the Trojans swept the 49ers 7-0.This will be the season opener for both teams.

HEAD COACH Richard Gallien: Now entering his 11th season at Troy, Gallien has strung together 10 straight NCAA appearances, nine top-20 team rankings and five trips to the NCAA Quarterfinals. Under Gallien's watch, USC has finished no lower than 11th for the past seven years. At USC, Gallien has compiled a 176-87 overall record and .669 win percentage. In his 13 years as a head coach (also coaching the men at Pepperdine prior to coming to USC), he boasts a 238-111 (.682) career mark.
