Jan. 19, 2006
LOS ANGELES - For the second year in a row the No. 12 UCLA women's tennis team kicked off its dual-match season with a victory over local rival Loyola Marymount, as the Bruins posted a 7-0 decision over Lions in the season opener for both teams Thursday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
After cruising to victory on all three doubles courts to take an early 1-0 advantage in the match, the Bruins came out strong in singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets.
Sophomore Tracy Lin paced the Bruins on the afternoon, as she failed to surrender a game en route to a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Erin Ivey at the No. 3 position.
Lin's victory was quickly followed up with wins from freshman Ashley Joelson and senior Laura Gordon to clinch the match for UCLA. Joelson, who was making her dual-match debut Thursday, was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Maja Sundac at court No. 5. Gordon, who is ranked 94th nationally, downed Robyn Baker 6-2, 6-1 at court No. 2.
Both Elizabeth Lumpkin and 77th-ranked Alex McGoodwin also posted convincing victories. The most competitive match of the afternoon came at court No. 1, where UCLA sophomore Riza Zalameda needed a second-set tiebreaker to eventually down Pavla Mesterova, 6-4, 7-6(5).
In addition to Joelson, UCLA freshman Anna-Viktoria Lind was also playing in the first dual match of her career Thursday. She played doubles with McGoodwin at court No. 2, winning 8-3 over Patrycia Hubl and Ivey.
UCLA returns to action next week, hosting UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday and Rice on Thursday. Both matches begin at 1:30 p.m. and will be played at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
