Stanford Swimmers Prepare For Arizona Invasion

Already this year, several Cardinal swimmers have gained the NCAA 'A' and 'B' Standards ... Andy Grant, the school record holder in the 200 free, has an NCAA 'A' standard time of 1:35.24 ... Last year, Grant set the school record of 1:35.97 in finishing third and gaining All-America honors at the NCAA Championship, an event in which Stanford finished second ... Grant also has an NCAA 'A' standard time of 4:18.43 in the 500 free with a time of 4:18.43 ... Last year, Grant chalked up a career-best 4:17.28 in the 500 free at the Pac-10 Championship which is sixth-best in school history ... In the 100 back, Hongzhe Sun has an NCAA 'A' standard of 47.29 ... Last year in the prelims at the NCAA's, Sun set a career-best of 46.55 which also is seventh-best in school history ... Sun also an NCAA 'A' standard in the 200 back with a time of 1:42.82 ... Last year at the Pac-10 Championship, Sun chalked up a career-best 1:41.25 ... Sun is also off to a fast start in the 200 IM where he has an NCAA 'A' standard with a time of 1:46.08 ... NCAA 'B' standard times have been turned in this year by Ben Wildman-Tobriner in the 50 free (20.23) and 100 free (43.96), Danny Beal in the 200 free (1:37.23) and 500 free (4:23.56), Shaun Phillips in the 500 free (4:23.77) and 1660 free (15:19.23), Jason Dunford (48.52), Andy Grant in the 200 back (1:45.72), Tobias Oriwol in the 200 IM (1:47.61), Mark Stephens in the 200 IM (1:49.52) and the 400 IM (3:50.18) ... The Stanford 800 free relay team has the 'B' standard time of 6:30.16) along with the 400 medley relay team (3:16.71).

For the third year in a row, Stanford is the champion of the Speedo Cup (Nov. 17-19, 2005)... The Cardinal easily defeated 13 other teams to chlak up 1,819 points over the three day event ... Hongzhe Sun was named the male Most Outstanding Athlete of the Meet ... Sun set a new Speedo Cup record in the 200 back with a time of 1:42.82 ... Earlier in the meet, Sun had an 'A' qualifying time in the 200 IM with his time of 1:46.08 ... Sun has an an 'A' qualifying itme of 47.29 in the 100 back ... Stanford winners the Speedo Cup included Ben Wildman-Tobriner in the 50 free (20.23) and the 100 free (43.96), Andy Grant in the 200 free (1:35.24) and 500 free (4:18.43), Tobias Oriwol in the 400 IM (3:50.18), Paul Kornfeld in the 200 breast (2:00.97), Danny Beal in the 200 fly (1:48.22), Shaun Phillips in the 1650 free (15:19.23), the 200 free relay team (1:20.68), the 400 medley relay team (3:16.71), the 200 medley relay team (1:29.35), the 800 free relay team (6:30.16), Jason Dunford in the 100 fly (49.03) ... Against California on Nov. 9, Hongzhe Sun won three events (50, 100 and 200 backstroke) and Andy Grant prevailed in the 200 free and 500 free, Ben Wildman-Tobriner in the 50 free, Tobias Oriwol in the 100 IM, and Noa Sakamoto in the 1000 free ... Ben Wildman-Tobriner has been selected by USA Swimming as a member of the distinguished 2005-06 National 'A' and 'B' teams ... National 'A' Team members are those swimmers who have achieved a Top-8 FINA world ranking while 'B' Team members are ranked in the Top-16 in individual Olympic events during the traditional long course season (Jan. 1 - Sept. 1, 2005) ... Wildman-Tobriner is a member of the 'A' team along with former Stanford swimmer Randall Bal ... Former Cardinal standouts Jayme Cramer and Peter Marshall help comprise the National 'B' team.
Stanford's Hongzhe Sun and USC's Ous Mellouli were named Pac-10 Men's Co-Swimmers of the Month for November ... Sun, a junior from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, was dubbed the Most Oustanding Athlete of the Meet at the UC Irvine Speedo Cup, after shattering a meet record and setting a new lifetime best in the 200-yard IM (1:46.08) ... His time was also the best in the country for the season ... Later in the meet, Sun recorded the second-best time in the nation in the 100-yard backstroke, winning the race in 47.29 ... Sun then set another meet record in the 200-yard backstroke with an NCAA 'A' time of 1:42.82 ... Earlier in the month, Sun won the 100-yard (48:35) and 200-yard backstrokes (1:45.19) at the Stanford/California Triple Distance Meet ... This is the first monthly honor for Sun and Mellouli, respectively, as well as USC and Stanford's first Swimmer of the Month honor all-time ... Mellouli, a senior from Tunis, Tunisia, posted three wins for the Trojans in each of their November meets ... In USC's dual-meet season opener versus No. 6 Texas, Mellouli posted wins in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:01.83), the 500-yard freestyle (4:23.00), and the 400-yard individual medley (3:57.11) ... In a non-scoring distance meet against Texas, Mellouli won individual medley races at 100 (51.52), 300 (2:53.67) and 600 (6:00.83) yards ... At No. 5 Arizona, the 2004 Olympic finalist won the 1,000-yard free (9:06.16), the 500-yard free (4:30.22), and the 200-yard IM with an NCAA consideration time of 1:48.91 ... The following day at Arizona State, Mellouli won the 200-yard (1:39.07) and the 500-yard free (4:28.92), in additon to his NCAA consideration performance in the 400-yard IM (3:50.31), to help the Trojans capture their first victory of the season.
With the return of a defending national champion and a total of ten returning All-Americans, Arizona seems primed for even greater accomplishments during the 2005-06 season ... The Wildcats return 18 letter winners from a 2004-05 squad that finished third at the NCAA Championship ... As a team, Arizona scored 388 points at the 2005 NCAA Championships, all tallied by a combination of ten swimmers and one diver ... Auburn won the national title with 491 points compared to 414 for Stanford ... Last year, senior Simon Burnett hook home the NCAA title in the 200 freestyle for the second time in his career ... Burnett is the current Pac-10 and NCAA record holder in the 200 free (1:32.22) ... Senior Lyndon Ferns was a seven-time All-American in 2005 ... Dave Rollins carries the breaststroke and individual medley events as he posted a new school record in the 200 IM after finishing second at the NCAA's last year in a time of 1:44.42 ... Also look for top performances from Tyler DeBerry, a three-time All-American in 2005.

With 13 letter winners and a highly touted group of newcomers, Arizona State is aiming to finish high in the standings at this year's NCAA Championship ... Last season, the Sun Devils finished 20th while only scoring in diving competition at the NCAA's ... Leading the way is senior diver Joona Puhakka of Finland ... Puhakka claimed the one-meter springboard national title and defended his his three-meter springboard championship sweeping the springboard events in 2005 ... In doing so, Puhakka became the first male student-athlete to win two individual national championships in the same season . Puhakka was the 2005 Pac-10 and NCAA Diver of the Year ... Puhakka is a two-time Olympian (2000, 2004) for Finland.
