Husky Gymnasts Fall To No. 13 UCLA

Jan. 20, 2006

Seattle - Kelly McDonald won bars and Ashley Houghting won vault for the Husky gymnastics team, but 13th-ranked UCLA (5-1) escaped Bank of America Arena with a 194.600-190.650 team victory. All-American Kate Richardson won beam, floor and led a top-four sweep on all-around for UCLA.

The Huskies had a stellar start to the evening, jumping out of the gate on vault by tallying a season-high 48.775. Three Huskies scored a 9.8 or higher, led by Houghting (Welland, Ont./Welland Secondary), who tallied a career-best 9.900. Kristen Omori (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita HS) and Chelsea Bakken (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View HS) each scored 9.825. Three Bruins scored a 9.8 or better on vault and they won the event 49.050-48.775.

In the second rotation, the 22nd-ranked Huskies (2-5) were forced to count three falls on bars, hurting any chance of taking the team title. McDonald (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) did her best to keep the Huskies in the running with her season-high 9.900. Darcee Schiller (Abbottsford, BC/Bateman Secondary) was the only other Husky to tally a 9.0 or better, recording a 9.500. UCLA took second through sixth-place on the event

'We had some highs and lows,' said Husky Head Coach Bob Levesque. 'We really struggled on bars. We lost Raimey Iselin due to a lingering back injury and that kind of took the wind out of sails.'

The Huskies tried to regain some momentum on beam and were led by McDonald, who took second with a 9.875. Houghting scored a 9.725 to tie for fourth. Richardson scored a 9.900 to lead UCLA to a 48.500 on beam.

On the final rotation, no Husky floor competitors could top Richardson. She scored a 9.800 to win the event.

Chelsea Bakken and Kristen Omori each scored a 9.775 to lead a logjam of four competitors for second on floor. UCLA outscored Washington 48.300-48.125 to lock up the clean sweep of the top team score for all four events.

Despite the falls and the loss, Levesque promises to prepare the Huskies for the long haul.

'We have 10 more meets to get ready for NCAA Regionals,' said Levesque. 'We just have to learn from each meet. The only person they can effect change in is themselves, so they just will have to work on that back in the gym.'

The Huskies return to action on Friday, January 27 at Bank of America Arena where they will take on Arizona State and Seattle Pacific University at 7 p.m.
