Baseball Opens 2006 Season with 19-5 Win in Annual Alumni Game
Jan. 21, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. - Sophomore centerfielder J.J. Sferra knocked in five RBI as part of his 3-4 day to help lead the 2006 Arizona State Sun Devils to a 19-5 victory over the Alumni in the annual Alumni game. Freshman southpaw Jeff Urlaub was impressive during his ASU debut, fanning four in his two innings of work at Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
Prior to the game, members of the 1981 National Championship team were honored, as were members of the Brock family as the ballpark was named in honor of former Sun Devils Head Coach Dr. Jim Brock. The facility was dedicated Friday night in a ceremony held at the entrance to Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
Head Coach Pat Murphy got a good look at his pitching staff, using eight hurlers in the game. The bullpen combined to hold the alumni to one run over the final eight innings. Starter Zechry Zinicola was touched for four runs in the first, walking two and hitting another.
The Sun Devil bats were alive and well on a beautiful Arizona Saturday afternoon, as six Sun Devils had multi-hit games, led by Sferra's three, including two doubles. Preseason All-American Colin Curtis was 2-5 with a double and an RBI. Brett Bando and Preston Paramore provided the fireworks, as both went deep for ASU.
The Sun Devils open the 2006 regular season at Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark next weekend, when they host Cal State Northridge in a three-game series beginning Friday. First pitch for the opener is at 7 pm, with the next two slated for 1 pm starts. For tickets, call 480-727-0000 or log on to www.TheSunDevils.com.
