No. 17 Cal Defeats Cal Poly, Saint Mary's

BERKELEY - The No. 17 California women's tennis team defeated Cal Poly, 7-0, and Saint Mary's, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley, in its first dual matches of the season. Cal improves to 2-0 for the season, while Cal Poly falls to 0-2 and Saint Mary's to 0-1.

In the first match of the day, Cal convincingly defeated Cal Poly, 7-0, grabbing all three doubles victories as well as all six singles victories. Zsuzsanna Fodor teamed up with Claire Ilcinkas, playing in the No. 1 doubles spot for the Bears, to defeat Samantha Walker and Danon Beatty, 8-0. Marion Ravelojanoa and Bojana Bobusic recorded a victory over Carol Erickson and Amanda Varela, 8-2, while teammates Jessica Shu and Cristina Visico defeated Sheila Lewis and Maria Malec, 8-2.

On the singles court No. 19 nationally ranked Zsuzsanna Fodor, who played in the No. 1 singles spot for the Bears, defeated Samantha Waller, 6-1, 6-0. 14th ranked Suzi Babos played in the No. 2 singles spot for Cal, grabbing a victory over Danon Beatty, 6-1, 6-2. 34th ranked Marion Ravelojanoa, who played No. 3 singles, defeated Carol Erickson in three sets, 6-4, 4-6 (10-6), winning the match point. Cal tallied three more singles victories on the afternoon over Cal Poly.

Against Saint Mary's, Cal again grabbed all three doubles victories and all seven singles victories. Playing at the No. 1 doubles spot, Fodor/Ilcinkas defeated Aude Lambert and Jessica Hoath, 8-5. Bobusic/ Ravelojaona, who played No.2 doubles, grabbed a victory over Stef Ordoveza and Erin Young, 8-4. The No. 3 doubles team, Shu/Visico, defeated Feline Charlot and Caitlin Aloia, 8-6.

In singles play Babos, who played No. 1 singles, defeated Aude Lambert, 6-4, 6-2. Fodor recorded a win over Erin Young, 6-0, 6-4, while playing No. 2 singles. Bobusic, who played in the No. 3 position, outlasted Jessica Hoath, 7-5, 6-2. Cal recorded four more singles victories over Saint Mary's.

Cal hosts San Diego next Saturday, Jan. 28 at noon, at Hellman Tennis Center.
