No. 19 California Men's Tennis Defeats Santa Clara and Saint Mary's

BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team opened its dual season Sunday facing Santa Clara and Saint Mary's. The Golden Bears defeated the Broncos 6-1, and defeated the Gaels 7-0 in Berkeley, Calif.
In the morning against Santa Clara, the Bears won all but two matches. Individually in singles, senior Conor Niland's return to action was successful. Niland defeated Jan Macek in two sets (6-1, 6-1) in the first position. Senior Lennart Maack also secured his first dual singles victory, beating Kevin McQuaid, 6-3, 6-2 (second position). In the third position junior Daniel Sebescen defeated Blane Shields (6-3, 6-0). Sophomore Ken Nakahara outlasted Bobby Rasmussen, 6-2, 7-5 (fourth position). Junior John Pettit beat his opponent from Santa Clara in a tiebreaker. Pettit defeated Tommy Hicks, 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the sixth position. Freshman Eoin Heavey was Cal's lone loss in singles. Heavey was defeated by Brian Brogan (6-2, 6-2).
On the doubles court for the Bears against Santa Clara, Niland and Heavey teamed up in the first position to defeat Santa Clara's Rasmussen and Macek, 9-8 (1). In the third position junior Tyler Browne and senior Dean Wallace defeated Brogan and A.J. Kerin (8-3). Cal's lone loss in doubles came at the hands of McQuaid and Shield against Maack and Sebecsen (9-7) in the second position.
The Golden Bears took the courts against Saint Mary's in the afternoon. Cal swept the singles action, picking up six points. In the first position, Niland easily defeated Martin Marechal (6-0, 6-0). Browne defeated Julien Tizot in the second position 6-2, 6-3. Sebescen notched a point for the Bears, by defeating Andre Sion in the No. 3 position (7-6, 6-2). Nakahara beat Adam Fauvre, 6-4, 6-2. Heavey secured his first dual singles win, by outlasting Achim Chrisner (7-5, 6-5). In the sixth position Wallace easily snuck by Alp Ozpinar (6-1, 6-2).
In doubles play the Bears notched another point against the Gaels by Wallace and Browne defeating Marechal and Fauvre, 7-6. Maack and Sebescen rebounded from their morning loss to defeat Christner and Yury Platonov (8-1) in the second position. In the third position Pettit and Nakahara outlasted Jackson and Ozpinar, 8-5.
The Bears will open Pac-10 action on Friday, Feb. 3 when they play host to the Bruins of UCLA at 1:30 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Center.
