Stanford's Matt Haryasz Named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Jan. 23, 2006
Stanford forward/center Matt Haryasz has been named the U.S. Bank Pacific-10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for January 16 - 22, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Haryasz, who hails from Page, Ariz., averaged 26.0 points and 2.5 blocks last weekend in his homecoming at the Arizona schools. On Thursday, Haryasz scored 25 points, shooting 8-of-15 (.533) from the field, including 9-of-10 from the free throw line, in the Cardinal's 90-81 overtime loss at Arizona. He also posted seven rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals in Tucson.
On Saturday, Haryasz collected his seventh double-double of the season, as Stanford picked up its first win on the road at Arizona State. He posted a career-high 27 points, shooting 9-of-15 (.600) from the field, and a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe, and added 10 boards in the 70-64 win. The senior also made his 100th block against the Sun Devils, becoming only the fourth player in school history to record 100 blocks in a career. His mark ranks fourth on the Farm's all-time list, passing former Cardinal standout Josh Childress' 95 career blocks.
This season, Haryasz is averaging a team-leading 18.4 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game.
Stanford (8-7 overall, 4-3 Pac-10) will host the Washington schools this weekend, facing the Cougars on Thurs., Jan. 26 and the No. 10 Huskies on Sun., Jan. 29.
This is the first weekly honor for Haryasz and Stanford's 36th Player of the Week all-time.
