With three dual meets left on their schedule, the Golden Bears women's swimming and diving team make an important trek to Los Angeles. Awaiting them are two tough opponents, No. 11 USC (3-2, 1-1 Pac-10) and No. 7 UCLA (6-1, 2-1).

The next time Cal heads south it will be for the 2006 Pac-10 Championships held in Long Beach, Calif. The conference meet runs fromFeb. 22-25.

SCOUTING THE TROJANS
USC last competed against Cal State Bakersfield on Jan. 14, and won the meet 196-45 at home. The Trojans feature two NCAA champions: junior Kalyn Keller, who won the 1,500 free in 2004, and senior diver Blythe Hartley, a champion in the 1-meter (2002), 3-meter (2005) and platform (2002).In 2005, Cal beat USC 175.5-124.5 in Berkeley. The Bears hold a 15-11 all-time series record against the Trojans.

UCLA comes off a win over Pacific, 147-109 on Jan. 14. Cal also defeated the Tigers earlier this season in a 155-99 win. The Bruins, who feature six All-Americans including Katie Arnold, Katie Nelson, Eileen Seissen, Nicolette Teo, Amy Thurman and Kim Vandenberg, host third-ranked Stanford Friday.

Both the Bears and Bruins competed at the Georgia Invitational in December, with Cal placing second (905 points) and UCLA taking third (729). Last year, Cal defeated UCLA 161-139 in Berkeley. The Bears are 14-10 all-time vs. UCLA.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Six members of the Cal women's swimming and diving program will be making a sort of homecoming this weekend in Southern California. Junior Lauren Andrews (back/free) competed her first year at Cal State Northridge before transferring to Cal. Freshmen Jessica Hardy (breast/IM) and Lara Pease (back) graduated from Long Beach Wilson in Long Beach, Calif. Divers Katy Banks and Chiara Reese-Hilborn are both from Laguna Hills, Calif.

First-year team manager Kristen Lewis is a former UCLA swimmer. Lewis was a captain for UCLA from 2003-04.
