Six Pac-10 Schools Ranked Among Top-25 in ESPN.com/USA Softball Pre-Season Poll

Jan. 24, 2006

Six Pac-10 softball teams -- UCLA, ARIZONA, CALIFORNIA, STANFORD, OREGON STATE and WASHINGTON -- are ranked among the Top-25 teams in the nation, according to the 2006 ESPN.com/USA Softball pre-season poll. The poll is voted on by NCAA Division I coaches representing 15 different Amateur Softball Association regions and 11 different collegiate conferences.

Perennial power UCLA, who returns all of its starters from the 2005 roster that finished second in the Women's College World Series, is ranked No. 2 after garnering three first-place votes. Arizona, led by three-time All American pitcher Alicia Hollowell and 2005 USA Softball Player of the Year candidate Caitlin Lowe, was picked to finish fifth.

Co-Conference champions California and Stanford are ranked No. 7 and 9, respectively. Rounding out the Top-25 are co-Conference champions Oregon State at the 12 spot and Washington at 14. OREGON and ARIZONA STATE also received votes in the poll.

The Pac-10 leads all conferences with four teams in the top 10. 2006 marks the first time ever a team outside of the Pac-10 sits atop the ESPN.com/USA Softball Pre-season poll.

Pac-10 softball officially begins on Thursday, Feb. 9 when Arizona State and UCLA begin pre-season tournament action.
