No. 13 ASU Downs Husky, SPU Gymnasts

Jan. 27, 2006

Seattle - Seattle native April Boone won all-around for Arizona State and led the 13th-ranked Sun Devils (4-0) to a win over Washington (3-6) and Seattle Pacific University (1-2) at Bank of America Arena on Friday night in front of 1,134 fans.

Ashley Houghting (Welland, Ont./Welland Secondary) and Kelly McDonald (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) won vault and beam respectively for the Huskies. It is the third time this season that the pair has won those events at the same meet.

For the Huskies, the evening was eerily similar to the previous week's meet vs. UCLA. Washington jumped out of the gate like gang-busters in the first rotation, setting a season-high on vault with a 48.875. Like last week, they stumbled in the second rotation, falling three times on their way to a 45.850 score.

The Huskies were once again led on vault by Houghting's second-consecutive 9.9. She was tied by ASU's Cassandra Jusino, who also recorded a 9.9 on the very last vault of the evening's competition.Kristen Omori (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita HS) scored a career-high with a 9.850, while Chelsea Bakken (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View HS) and Natalie Gillan (Denver, Calif./Pomona HS) each scored season-high's with 9.825 and 9.700 respectively.

McDonald once again did her part to on bars, scoring a 9.800, but the next highest score for the Huskies was Houghting's 9.325. Arizona State was forced to count a fall on bars and scored a 47.950. The Sun Devils were led by Ashley Kelly and Tia Orlando, who each scored a 9.725.

'We were ahead after the first rotation and then they beat us by four points on the second rotation,' said Husky Head Coach Bob Levesque. 'I was very disappointed on bars. Kelly did a good job. We knew we'd be struggling on bars, but the other kids just hadn't picked it up.'

The Huskies were never able to fully recover after the second rotation. Arizona State swept the top three spots on beam, led by Nicole Harris and Ashley Kelly, who each scored a 9.875. Houghting was fourth on beam with a career-high 9.800. Seattle Pacific scored a 47.500 on beam and was paced by Sarah Sullivan's 9.750.

The Huskies managed a season-high 48.875 on floor, but were no match for the Sun Devils' 49.075. Jusino and Boone placed one-and-two respectively in the event followed by Bakken and Omori who tied for third with 9.850. Sullivan was fifth, pacing the way for the Falcons with a 9.825.

The Huskies return to action next Friday, February 3 at Arizona.
