Christal Morrison Named P-I Sports Star Of The Year

SEATTLE-- Washington volleyball standout Christal Morrison was tabbed the female P-I Sports Star of the Year Tuesday night, beating out three other women, including UW women's basketball player Kayla Burt and UW pole vaulter Kate Soma. Washington men's basketball coach Lorenzo Romar was among six nominees for the men's award, which was given to Seattle Seahawk Shaun Alexander.
Morrison becomes the first Washington winner since women's crew coach Jan Harville won the award in 2001.
Morrison, a sophomore outside hitter, led Washington to its first-ever national title with 15 kills in the championship match vs. Nebraska to earn the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award. Morrison started all 33 matches for the Huskies, averaging 5.29 points and 4.36 kills per game with a .337 hitting percentage. She ranked second in the Pac-10 with 0.51 services aces per game and her 55 aces this season ranked second on the UW all-time list.
Morrison was an AVCA third team All-American, Asics honorable mention All-American, College Station Regional MVP, All-Pacific Region honoree, first team All-Pac-10 selection and was a Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention pick.
