No. 17 California Men's Tennis Fall to No. 4 UCLA

BERKELEY -The California men's tennis team opened its Pac-10 play on Friday against the defending national champions, the UCLA Bruins. The Golden Bears did not have enough power to get pass them, as they fell to UCLA 6-1. Senior Conor Niland defeated the third-ranked player in the No. one position recording the Bears only victory.
Indivually in singles, Niland landed an upset victory over the No. three-ranked Bruin junior Benjamin Kohlloeffel. Niland easily defeated Kohlloeffel in two matches, 6-3; 6-2. However, the other five Bears did not fair as well. Sophomore Ken Nakahara fell, 7-5; 6-4 to UCLA's junior Chris Surapol. Junior Daniel Sebescen was defeated in the fourth position by freshman Adam Draper (6-2, 6-3). In the second position, senior Lennart Maack fell to freshman Haythem Abid, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. UCLA's Jeremy Drean got the best of freshman Eoin Heavey (7-6; 6-0; 6-3) in the sixth position. In the final match of the day, junior Tyler Browne was defeated by Mathieu Dehaine, 6-3; 4-6; 6-3.
However, on the doubles side the Bears were not as lucky as they dropped all three matches. After starting the dual season off 1-0, Niland and Heavey dropped the match to Kohlloeffel and junior Philipp Gruendler (8-2). Surapol and Abid defeated senior Dean Wallace and Browne in the No. two doubles position (8-4). Dehaine and junior Aaron Yovan outlasted Sebescen and Maack, 8-6.
The Bears will return to the courts on Saturday, Feb. 4 as they host the Trojans of USC. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. (PST) start at the Hellman Tennis Center.
