Stanford Starts Season With Dramatic 2-1 Win Over No. 5 Cal State Fullerton
Feb. 3, 2006
Stanford, Calif. - Pinch hitter Brendan Domaracki's one-out bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth scored Michael Taylor with the game-winning run to lift Stanford (1-0) to a dramatic season-opening 2-1 victory over No. 5 Cal State Fullerton at Sunken Diamond on Friday night. Jeremy Bleich (1-0) pitched 2.1 hitless innings in his first collegiate outing to earn the victory after starter Greg Reynolds had limited the Titans to one run while scattering eight hits over the first 6.2 frames.
Taylor (2-4, 3B) was the only Cardinal player with more than one hit and led off the Cardinal half of the ninth with his triple down the right field line off losing pitcher Dustin Miller (0-1). Martin stayed in the game to intentionally walk Jason Castro and John Hester before giving way to Vinnie Pestano, who enticed Chris Lewis to pop-out prior to allowing Domaracki's game-winner.
Brandon Tripp (3-3, 2 2B, 3 RBI) was the only Titan with more than one hit.
The teams will continue the series with single games on Saturday and Sunday with both contests scheduled to start at 1:00 pm, PT.
