No. 17 California Men's Tennis Defeats No. 18 USC

BERKELEY -The California men's tennis team bounced back from its loss yesterday to No. 4 UCLA to defeat the No. 18 USC Trojans, in Berkeley at the Hellman Tennis Center. The Bears won four singles matches in two sets, and added a singles victory and dropped a decision in three sets. Cal did however, lose all three doubles matches.
In singles, Senior Conor Niland expanded his dual match winning streak to four in the No. one position, with a victory over USC's sophomore Dejan Cvetkovic in two sets (6-2; 6-3). Sophomore Ken Nakahara also landed a win, after he beat freshman Chong Wang, 6-0; 6-2. In the third position, junior Tyler Browne defeated sophomore Adam Loucks in two sets 6-4, 6-1. Junior Daniel Sebescen sealed the Bears victory by defeating Garrett Snyder in the fourth position (6-3; 6-2).
Two Bears went into the third set attempting to pick up a win. In the sixth position junior John Pettit outlasted senior Jeff Kazarian. He defeated him in the final two sets, 2-6; 6-2; 6-4. Senior Lennart Maack did not have the same success as Pettit had in the third set. Maack fell 6-4; 6-3; 7-5 to sophomore Kaes Van't Hoff.
California continued to struggle in doubles on Saturday. Browne and senior Dean Wallace played in the first position, but fell to junior Jamil Al-Agba and Cvetkovic, 8-4. USC's Loucks and Synder defeated Maack and Sebescen in the second position, 8-2. In the third position, Niland and Nakahara were beat by Van't Hof and Kazarian 8-4.
The Bears will host Fresno State next Saturday, Feb. 18. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. (PST) at the Hellman Tennis Center.
