Feb. 7, 2006
RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Cyle Hankerd and Lucas Duda had four hits each Tuesday as the USC Trojans earned its first win of the season with a 13-10 victory over the host UC Riverside Highlanders. The Trojans led 10-0 in the sixth and held off a late Highlanders rally, banging out 18 hits on the evening.
USC (1-3) loaded the bases in the first and scored its first two runs when UCR first baseman Nick Salotti dropped a pop up in the infield that should have been the final out. The Highlanders committed four errors on the evening as the Trojans jumped out to the commanding lead.
Freshman Tommy Milone (1-0) earned the win with 4 2/3 innings in relief, allowing five runs on nine hits. All five runs came in his fifth inning of work after holding UCR (3-1) scoreless for four straight innings. Freshman David Parrow (Waianae, HI) made his collegiate debut, throwing a perfect eighth inning for the Trojans.
'It was a key to get a win tonight after last weekend,' said Hankerd. 'We needed to get it out of our system.'
Jeff Dunbar went 4-for-5 with a double and four RBI to lead the Highlanders. Down by five with two outs in the ninth, UCR scored two runs and had a runner at first before Steve Martlaro retired Aaron Wible on a fly ball to center.
With their performances, Hankerd and Duda are a combined 17-for-32 in the first four games of the season.
