TEMPE, Ariz. - Tickets for the first-ever Whataburger College Classic go on sale this coming Monday, February 13th, and may be purchased in a variety of ways.  The tournament, featuring Arizona State, takes place at Whataburger Field March 9-12.

Individual daily tickets, priced at $5 for adults and $3 for children between the ages of 3 and 12, are good for both games each day.  Kids 2 and under will be admitted free of charge.

Classic tickets may be obtained by phone at 361-561-HOOK (4665), or online at www.cchooks.com/tickets

Three of the four schools in the Classic are off to flying starts this season, while the fourth school, TCU, opens its 2006 slate this weekend.

The host TAMUCC Islanders are 3-0 after a rousing sweep of Texas Southern this past weekend.  The Islanders batted .412 during the sweep, and outscored the Tigers 55-14.  Senior outfielder Clint Galloway paced the offense with a .636 average and a 1.364 slugging percentage.  Freshman infielder Ernie Olivarez knocked in seven runs and batted .545 in the series to get his collegiate career off to a running start.  The Islanders are next in action this Friday, when they go on the road for a four-game series at Troy University.

The Rice Owls, currently ranked 5th nationally in Baseball America's most recent poll of Division-I schools, are off to a 2-0 start after victories over Central Missouri State and McNeese State.  Five Rice hurlers have combined to post a 1.00 team ERA after two games, led by Joe Savery and Eddie Degerman.  The Owls' top two starters have combined for seven shutout innings and 11 strikeouts.  Rice, the 2003 NCAA national champion, returns 20 lettermen from last year's squad, which posted a record of 45-19.

The Arizona State Sun Devils are 5-1 and ranked 16th in the nation by Baseball America after series wins over Cal State Northridge and Northern Illinois.  Coach Pat Murphy's crew took two of three from Cal State, then swept three from Northern Illinois this past weekend.  Sophomore outfielder Willy Fox leads a balanced Sun Devil offense, batting .353-2-7 with an .824 slugging percentage after six games.  Junior starting pitcher Pat Bresnehan is already 2-0 with a 0.66 ERA, having allowed just one earned run over 13.2 innings.

The TCU Horned Frogs are currently ranked 21st in the nation by Baseball America despite the fact that Jim Schlossnagle's club has yet to take the field.  TCU will open its season this Friday against Tulane in the Astros' College Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston.  Rice also plays in that tournament, opening Friday against Texas Tech.  The Frogs, 41-20 last season, are favored to win the Mountain West Conference and are led by two-time all-conference selection Chad Huffman.  The junior infielder batted .353 last year and paced TCU with 12 homers and 53 RBI's.

The Whataburger College Classic occurs during Spring Break for many colleges and universities, and Corpus Christi and the surrounding areas offer much at this time of the year.  South Padre Island has long been a popular Spring Break destination, but for those planning to travel to Corpus Christi for the tournament, there are other enjoyable attractions near Whataburger Field.

The USS Lexington Museum On The Bay http://www.usslexington.com/ offers a nostalgic trip through wartime history and tours of the carrier that are simply fascinating.  For those who are drawn more to the intrigue of aquatic life, the Texas State Aquarium http://www.texasstateaquarium.org/index.html provides an educational and fun experience for the whole family.
