High Winds Hinder UW Second Round Efforts at Waikoloa

Feb. 9, 2006

Waikoloa, Hawaii - The 21st-ranked Washington men's golf team stands in a tie for fourth place after the second round of the Waikoloa Invitational. The Huskies battled strong winds to shoot a 9-over 293 after carding a 5-under 279 in Wednesday's opening round. Washington moved up in the standings from sixth despite shooting above par, but the Huskies trail tournament-leading Georgia Tech by 25 strokes. The Yellow Jackets posted a 5-under 279 - the best round of the day by 10 strokes - and own a 14-stroke lead over Oklahoma State. Washington shares fourth place with Hawaii. USC is third.

'It blew about 25 miles-per-hour the whole day,' said Husky head coach Matt Thurmond of the wind, 'So it was a tough go out there. I thought we were doing a good job at first, we just didn't finish very well.'

Washington senior James Lepp, the 2005 NCAA Champion, led the Huskies with an even par 71 in the second round. In combination with his 3-under 68 from round one, Lepp's effort puts him in a tie for eighth place overall, seven strokes behind leader Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech.

Junior Alex Prugh shot a 2-over 73 to put himself in 18th place with a two-round score of 1-under 141. Erik Olson carded a 3-over 74 and is currently 43rd, while Sterling Clark's 4-over 75 and Joe Panzeri's 6-over 77 have the pair amidst a tie for 60th.

The Waikoloa Invitational concludes Friday beginning at 7 a.m. local time.
