Cardinal Tops Utah State, 11-0, In Five Innings

Phoenix, Ariz. - No. 7 Stanford (2-0) came out on fire in the first two innings against Utah State (0-1) at the Kajikawa Classic, taking the game, 11-0, in five innings. Senior Catalina Morris and freshman Maddy Coon homered for the Cardinal, Coon's second home run of the day. Junior pitcher Laura Severson claimed her first win of the season.
The Cardinal opened its second game of the day at the Kajikawa Classic with two runs in the first inning. Sophomore Michelle Smith singled to left field, scoring senior Lauren Lappin. Coon tallied her first run of the game off of a hit by fellow freshman Missy Penna, putting Stanford ahead, 2-0.
In the second inning, Morris hit an RBI single to second base, scoring sophomore Tricia Aggabao. Smith followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Morris to score, and junior Jackie Rinehart hit an RBI single to knock in Lappin. Penna closed out the top of the second with an RBI single to left field, scoring Coon. Stanford ended the inning up, 6-0.
The Cardinal posted three more runs in the third inning off of sacrifice fly by Morris, an RBI double to second from Lappin and an RBI double to center field by Coon.
Morris knocked in a home run to open the fifth and final inning, her first home run of the season. Coon followed with her second home run of the day to center field. Coon ended the day 4-4 at the plate with 2 RBI.
In her first game of the season in the circle, Severson struck out one batter and allowed no runs in four innings. Sophomore Lauren Nydam finished the game with two strikeouts in one inning for the Cardinal.
Stanford returns to action tomorrow at 9:00 am versus New Mexico at the Kajikawa Classic.
