Cougar Tennis Sweeps Santa Clara

Kennewick, Wash. - The Washington State Cougars women tennis team defeated Santa Clara in sweeping fashion, 7-0. The Cougars did not drop a set in the whole match, and the Broncos are the third victim the Cougars have blanked this season.

Both Ekaterina Burduli and Marjolein van de Ven defended their national rankings by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Captain Burduli is currently No. 59 and defeated Santa Clara's Kelly Leathers, 6-0, 6-1. Junior transfer van de Ven is No. 81 and bested Erika Barnes, 6-1, 6-1. The two have a combined singles dual match record of 30-9.

Junior Amy Toth and partner Maria Ring led the way in doubles play. The two have played every dual doubles match in the No. 1 slot. They defeated Leathers and Barnes, 8-3. The win gives the tandem a 5-1 dual match record and a 7-2 overall record.

First time doubles duo Aleksandra Stefanova and van de Ven defeated Myra Davoudi and Stephanie Galainena, 8-2.

The match win gives the Cougars a 4-1 lead in the all-time series against the Broncos.

The Cougars will be put up to the test when they face No. 24 Oregon Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. The match is scheduled to be played in Kennewick, Wash., at the Tri City Court Club.
