McDonald, Houghting Once Again Lead Husky Gymnasts

Feb. 10, 2006

Logan, Utah - Ashley Houghting set a career-high to win vault and Kelly McDonald won bars as the Husky Gymnastics team (3-9) finished third at a tri-meet in Logan, Utah on Friday evening. It marks the fifth time in six meets that Houghting and McDonald have won vault and bars respectively.

Host Utah State (193.350) won the meet, Texas Woman's University finished second (191.125) and Washington finished third (190.400).

Houghting (Welland, Ontario) won vault with a 9.925 despite being sick with the flu throughout the meet. She was slated to compete all-around for the Huskies, but felt too ill to compete on floor, forcing the Huskies to use only five competitors on the event. The depleted Huskies were forced to count two falls on floor and tallied a season-low 45.675.

McDonald (Seattle/Roosevelt HS) was the only other Husky to win an individual event, tying for first on bars with Utah State's Jessica Parenti with a 9.825. Darcee Schiller (Abbottsford, B.C.) was the next highest scorer on bars, tallying a season-high tying 9.675 to take third on the event.

The Huskies led all three teams with a combined vault score of 48.700. Besides Houghting, Kristen Omori (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita HS) tied for third with a 9.825 and Chelsea Bakken (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View HS) was fifth with a 9.750.

McDonald led the Huskies effort on beam with a 9.825 to take second place. Omori and Kelly Gilbert (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain View HS) were the Huskies' next highest finishers, tying for sixth-place with a 9.750. The Huskies tallied a team total of 48.250.

Omori was the Huskies top floor performer with a second-place score of 9.725. Tori Quandt (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa HS) was eighth overall and the next highest scorer for the Huskies with a 9.475.

'We need to pick up the intensity,' said Head Coach Bob Levesque. 'Ashley was sick and we ran out of bodies for floor, but we need to do better against UCLA on Sunday.'

The Huskies head to Los Angeles where they will face the No. 11 UCLA Bruins on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 2:00 p.m.
