Nikki Blue Nominated For Nancy Lieberman Award
Feb. 10, 2006
UCLA senior Nikki Blue is amongst 11 nominees for the 2006 Nancy Lieberman Award, which honors the nation's top point guard.
Blue, who leads the Pac-10 in assists with an average of 5.3 per game, ranks No. 3 on UCLA's all-time assists charts with 536 over her career. She needs just eight more assists to tie Ann Meyers for second place. Blue averages 13.4 points per game and leads the Pac-10 with a three-point field goal percentage of 44.6%.
A pre-season Wooden Award, Naismith and Wade Trophy nominee, Blue is a four-year starter and a three-time first-team All-Pac-10 honoree and Pac-10 All-Tournament selection. The Bruins' team co-captain earned honorable mention WBCA/Kodak All-America honors last season.
The other nominees include: Lindsay Bowen (Michigan State), Dee Davis (Vanderbilt), Megan Duffy (Notre Dame), Erin Grant (Texas Tech), Lindsey Harding (Duke), Alexis Hornbuckle (Tennessee), Carolyn Kieger (Marquette), Ivory Latta (North Carolina), Leilani Mitchell (Idaho) and Cappie Pondexter (Rutgers).
The award, which is now in its seventh season, is presented annually by the Rotary Club of Detroit. A panel of national sportswriters chose this year's nominees based upon the award's criteria -- displaying the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills that personified Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman during her career.
Those same journalists will vote for three finalists and the award winner, who will be announced during the Final Four (April 2-4) in Boston. This year's honoree will receive the trophy during a gala luncheon April 12 at the Detroit Athletic Club. Lieberman will be on hand to present the award, whose past winners include three-time honoree Sue Bird and two-time selection Diana Taurasi (both of Connecticut), as well as last year's recipient, Temeka Johnson of LSU.
