No. 4 Waves Edge No. 8 Bruins in Men's Tennis Thriller
Feb. 10, 2006
LOS ANGELES - Several hundred Southern California tennis fans were treated to one of the most exciting college tennis matches in recent history at the Los Angeles Tennis Center Friday afternoon, as fourth-ranked Pepperdine edged No. 8 UCLA, 4-3 in a non-conference thriller. The loss snaps the Bruins' 28-match home winning streak, dating back to Mar. 10, 2004. Pepperdine, which picks up its first win over UCLA (4-2) in more than five years, remains undefeated on the season at 10-0.
What turned out to be a very crucial doubles point, Pepperdine took a 1-0 lead by taking two of three matches in the opening doubles competition. Following an 8-2 Pepperdine victory at court No. 3, and an 8-6 UCLA win at court No. 1, the Waves clinched the point at court No. 2, where 31st-ranked Ivor Lovrak and Pedro Rico posted an 8-6 win over UCLA's Haythem Abid / Chris Surapol. It marked the first time this year that UCLA has lost the doubles point.
The Waves kept up the momentum in singles play, taking the first two matches in straight sets for a 3-0 lead. Rico was first to finish at court No. 2, taking a 6-2, 6-2 win over Abid. Pepperdine junior Richard Johnson was next off, recording a 6-3, 7-5 win over Jeremy Drean at court No. 5.
Just when it looked like Pepperdine was going to run away with it, UCLA mounted a comeback. Both third-ranked Benjamin Kohlloeffel (court No. 1) and freshman Michael Look (court No. 6) posted straight-set wins to cut the lead to 3-2. It was at that point that Surapol and Mathieu Dehaine were heading to third sets in their matches at court Nos. 4 and 3 respectively.
Knowing the Bruins needed to win both matches to pull off the come-from-behind victory, Surapol did his part, tying the match at 3-3 with a 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3 decision over Andre Begemann. All eyes then turned to court No. 3, where Dehaine and Lovrak were on the verge of a third-set tiebreaker. With both teams cheering on the adjacent court and a vocal crowd huddled on the overlooking court No. 2 patio, Lovrak took the match, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(1), giving Pepperdine the 4-3 win.
UCLA looks to regroup next week, hosting San Diego State on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
