Stanford Takes Season-Opener Versus Nebraska, 7-3

Phoenix, Ariz. - No. 7 Stanford opened the 2006 season with a solid 7-3 win over No. 20 Nebraska at the Kajikawa Classic in Phoenix, Ariz. In the first of two games today, freshman Missy Penna scored her first home run and collected her first win in the circle for the Cardinal.
Nebraska scored the first run of the matchup as junior Jamie Waldecker hit an RBI single in the first inning. Penna answered in the fourth inning with a home run over the center field fence, tying the score at 1-1.
The Cardinal moved ahead, 2-1, in the fifth inning off of an RBI single by senior Catalina Morris. Freshman Maddy Coon hammered in her first home run for the Cardinal in the fifth inning, scoring three runs.
Nebraska's Waldecker hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to score teammate Meghan Mullin. Carmen Kier brought the score to 5-3 with a home run to right field before the end of the inning.
Penna claimed her first victory in the circle for the Cardinal, striking out six batters and allowing three earned runs in five innings. Sophomore Becky McCullough pitched two scoreless innings to end the game for Stanford at 7-3.
The Cardinal returns to action tomorrow at 9:00 am versus New Mexico at the Kajikawa Classic.
