Trojans Face The Cougars in Pullman, Wash.
Feb. 10, 2006
The USC men's basketball team (15-8, 6-6) will face the Washington State Cougars (10-10, 3-8) in Pullman, Wash. on Feb. 11. USC lost at Washington 87-73 on Feb. 9 in Seattle. The Trojans are 4-3 in their last seven games and have lost consecutive games for the third time this season. They have not lost three straight games this season. USC's 15 wins are the most they have had in a season since going 22-10 in 2002. USC won nine consecutive games from Nov. 25-Dec. 23, its longest winning streak since the 2001-02 season, when they also won nine straight.
ROAD RECAP -- The Trojans are 5-3 on the road this season, 3-3 in Pac-10 play. USC was 2-10 in road games last season. The Trojans' 3-0 start on the road this season was their best since the 1975-76 season.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON STATE -- The Trojans defeated Washington State 71-66 on Jan. 14 at the Sports Arena, snapping a four-game losing streak to the Cougars. USC has lost the last two games in Pullman, after winning the previous four. USC leads the all-time series with the Cougars 63-36. Washington State is led in scoring by Josh Akognon with 11.1 points per game, the only Cougar averaging in double figures. WSU lost their last game on Feb. 9 vs. UCLA, 50-30, while shooting just 27.5 percent from the field.
CROSSTOWN RIVAL UCLA ON DECK -- The UCLA Bruins (20-4, 10-2) will face the Trojans at the Sports Arena on Feb. 19, after first playing at Washington on Feb. 9. The Bruins defeated the Trojans 66-45 on Jan. 18 in Westwood, extended the Trojans' losing streak to UCLA to three games. Prior to that, USC had won four straight. The Trojans have won four of the last six games against the Bruins played at the Sports Arena. UCLA is led in scoring by Arron Afflalo (17.2 ppg) and Jordan Farmar (13.9 ppg).
PRUITT SIDELINED -- Sophomore guard Gabe Pruitt, USC's second-leading scorer, will be out at least three weeks with a tibial plateau fracture in his left knee, injured in practice on Feb. 6. He is averaging 17.0 points and 4.2 rebounds a game and is second in the conference with 50 steals.
THE BULGE ON THE BOARDS -- The Trojans were outrebounded by 14 (38-24) in the loss at Washington on Feb. 9. In the last eight games, USC has been outrebounded by 85 (300-215) or by an average of more than 10 rebounds per game. In six of the eight games, USC's opponent has reached double figures in offensive rebounds, and had nine in the other two games. USC defeated Arizona on Feb. 2 despite being outrebounded by 15 (45-30). The Trojans have now been slightly outrebounded in the 15 wins (518-508), compared to a sizeable disadvantage in the eight losses (319-236).
SHACK ATTACK -- Senior guard Dwayne Shackleford scored a career-high 15 points and hit a career-best four three-pointers at Washington on Feb. 9.
IN TIM WE TRUST --There is great excitement on the campus of USC as the Tim Floyd era for the USC men's basketball program has begun. Hired on Jan. 14, 2005, Floyd began his official duties on April 1 and has not slowed down since, recruiting a nationally-ranked incoming class, assembling a strong staff and installing a new system. Floyd brings 17 years of head coaching experience at the collegiate and NBA levels and owns a 258-138 record in his 13 seasons as a college head coach at Idaho (1987-88), New Orleans (1989-94), Iowa State (1995-98) and USC. In eight of his first 12 seasons, Floyd took his team into the postseason (5 NCAA, 3 NIT). Floyd has helped the development of his student-athletes at each stop, as 10 players in his first 12 years made it to the NBA, including three players who did not even play high school ball.
FAMILIAR AREA FOR FLOYD -- USC head coach Tim Floyd began his college head coaching career with the Idaho Vandals for the 1986-87 season, just down the road in Moscow, Idaho where USC is staying. His teams finished tied for fifth and second his two seasons coaching in the Big Sky conference and posted a composite 35-25 record.
100 YEARS OF HOOPS AT USC -- The Trojans are playing their 100th season of intercollegiate basketball and have a 1,389-1,000 record. The Trojans had a .500 or better record in 70 of the first 99 seasons.
ANGRY OPPONENTS -- Including today's game, USC has faced a team coming off a loss in 17 of the 24 games played.
THE OUTSIDE GAME -- After hitting just 27.8 percent of their three-point shots in the first eight games (32-for-115), USC has rebounded to hit at a 38.7 clip since (117-for-302). The Trojans have made 43 three-pointers in their last five games (8.6 per game). USC has taken the most three-pointers in conference games (238) for an average of 19.8 per game. The Trojans are second in conference play, hitting 38.7 percent of their shots from beyond the arc.
COMMITTED TO DEFENSE -- USC has held the opposition under 40 percent shooting nine times this season, but only once in conference games (Cal - Dec. 29). For the season, USC's opponents are making 42.4 percent of their shots, which ranks as fourth best in the conference. When Stanford scored 71 points vs. USC on Dec. 31, it snapped the Trojans' 11-game streak of holding the opposition under 70 points. It was the longest streak in a season by USC since the 1959-60 season when they went 13 consecutive games holding the opposition under 70 points. In 15 of the first 23 games, USC has held the opposition to under 70 points. The two games against Washington (86 on Jan. 12 and 87 on Feb. 9) were the two highest point totals USC has allowed this season.
GETTING TO THE LINE -- All four of USC's returning scholarship players have gotten to the free throw line more times than they did all last season. As a team, USC has shot 20 or more free throws in seven of the last eight games and 13 times this season. Last year USC had 11 games all season in which they shot 20 or more free throws, including seven of 18 conference games. This year, USC has taken 20 or more shots from the charity stripe eight times in the first 12 conference games. USC has taken 263 FT in Pac-10 games, third in the conference.
THIS AND THAT -- USC is 6-1 in games they have at least as many rebounds as the opposition, the only loss being the season opener against CSUN. USC is 7-2 this season when playing on one day or less of rest. USC is 14-4 in games in which the opponent scores 71 points or less. USC is 4-0 in games decided by two or fewer points. USC is 11-0 in games they lead at the half this season.
INJURY UPDATES -- RouSean Cromwell suffered a fractured right foot prior to the game on Dec. 23 and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. As a precautionary measure, he had a screw inserted in his foot on Dec. 29. Gabe Pruitt suffered a tibial plateau fracture in his left knee on Feb. 6 and is expected to miss a minimum of three weeks.
TROY'S YOUNG GUN -- Sophomore swingman Nick Young scored a career-high 32 points on Jan. 14 vs. Washington State and has scored 25 or more points four times this season Through 23 games, Young is averaging a team-leading 17.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. On Jan. 7 at Arizona, Young scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, his third double-double of the season and of his career. Young was held to eight points on Jan. 18 at UCLA, his first and only game this season not reaching double figures in scoring. His streak of 17 consecutive games reaching double figures in scoring was the most by a Trojan since Desmon Farmer also went 17 straight games reaching double digits during the 2003-04 season. Young is one of three Pac-10 players (along with Cal's Leon Powe and Stanford's Matt Haryasz) to rank in the top 10 in both scoring (5th) and rebounding (9th). Made a career-high 13 free throws on Feb. 9 at Washington.
PRUITT CAN DO IT -- Gabe Pruitt scored 30 points in the win at Oregon on Jan. 28, the third time this season he has scored at least 30 points. He becomes the ninth Trojan ever to score 30 or more points three times in a single season, the first since Harold Miner in 1992 (11 times). There have only been three Trojans with more 30-point games in one season: Miner (11-1992), John Block (8-1966) and Derrick Dowell (5-1987).
TAKING STOCK IN THE BLOCK -- USC has 80 blocks this season, after getting a total of 76 all of last season. Abdoulaye N'diaye has 35 blocks this season, more than any Trojan had last season (Rory O'Neil - 27). N'diaye ranks third in the conference in total blocks. N'diaye (2) and RouSean Cromwell (3) combined for five blocks in the 57-56 win at UAA on Nov. 26, including a game-saving swat by Cromwell with 6.0 seconds left in the game.
FOR STEWART, TIMING WAS EVERYTHING -- Guard Lodrick Stewart went into the game at ASU on Jan. 5 having scored at least 16 points in six straight games, but was held scoreless until knocking down the game-winning three-pointer with 2.1 seconds left. He rebounded with 16 points and seven rebounds at Arizona on Jan. 7, and has scored 14 points or more in 12 of the last 16 games. Stewart, who hit 40 percent of this three-pointers last season, missed his first six this season, but has rebounded and is hitting at a 43.2 percent clip for the season (38-for-88), fifth-best percentage among Pac-10 players.
NOT INTO CHARITY... -- USC has not hit better than 70 percent in free throws in a season since 2000-01 (70.6 percent). USC has made 68.2 percent of their free throws this season (313-for-459), eighth among Pac-10 teams. USC made 85.7 percent of their free throws (12-for-14) on Jan. 7 at Arizona and 82.8 percent of their free throws (24-for-29) in the game on Dec. 3 vs. BYU. Those are the Trojans' best two games at the line since hitting 87.0 percent of their shots from the charity stripe on March 6, 2003 vs. Washington.
FRESHMAN FRANCIS MAKING AN IMPACT -- Freshman Ryan Francis was second on the team with six rebounds and dished out eight assists in the game vs. Eastern Washington on Nov. 25. The eight assists were the most by a Trojan since Gabe Pruitt also had eight on Dec. 11, 2004 vs. San Diego. Francis registered eight assists again on Feb. 4 vs. Arizona State. In his first 23 games, Francis is averaging 6.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.8 steals. In the win vs. Stanford on Dec. 31, he scored a career-high 15 points, had four steals, two assists and no turnovers. Francis has posted five turnover-free games this season. He grabbed a career-high seven rebounds in the 72-20 overtime win at OSU on Jan. 26.
THE MEN OF STEAL -- USC is second among conference teams in steals with 187 and is averaging 8.13 per game. The Trojans are third in the conference in turnovers induced with 408. USC forced 28 Washington turnovers on Jan. 12. Gabe Pruitt (50) is second and Ryan Francis (42) is third in steals among Pac-10 players. Six times this season USC had forced 20 or more turnovers.
