No. 11 Trojans Get by No. 7 Bruins in Final Home Swim & Dive Meet of the Season

The No. 11 USC Trojans (4-4, 2-3 Pac-10) defeated the No. 7 UCLA Bruins (7-3, 3-3 Pac-10) in the final home dual meet of the season 177-123 as UCLA said goodbye to seven seniors swimming and diving for the last time at UCLA.
It was a record setting day on both sides of the pool as 11 meet and eight pool records were broken by the Bruins and Trojans. Both teams will now take two weeks off as they prepare for the Pac-10 Championships, Feb. 22-25 in Long Beach, CA.
'We swam great,' said Head Coach Cyndi Gallagher. 'We posted some great times and I'm really happy with how we competed today. Now we turn our focus to the meets that truly count - Pac-10's and NCAA's.'
On the day, the Bruins had two individual event winners in junior Katie Arnold and senior Kim Vandenberg. Arnold swam an 'A' qualifier and new personal best of 54.41 in the 100 Back to set a new meet record. Arnold also won the 200 Back in a time of 1:58.23. Vandenberg, swimming in her last home meet as a Bruin, posted wins in the 100 (54.47) and 200 Fly (1:56.90). She also placed second in the 200 Free (1:47.65).
Junior Katie Nelson placed second in the 1650 Free, swimming 16:25.72. It was the first time this season Nelson swam this distance and it qualified her for the NCAA Championships as she achieved the 'B' standard. Her time was just over two seconds shy of the automatic time for Nationals. Nelson also palced second in the 500 Free, swimming 4:49.37.
Fuccillo improved her season best and 'B' qualifier in the 200 Breast to 2:16.07 to place third, while sophomore Chiemi Yamamoto dropped her 'B' time and season best to 2:17.49, finishing fourth overall. Yamamoto also finished second in the 400 IM with a new season best of 4:16.90 for second place, while Fuccillo was fourth with a season best and improve 'B' qualifier of 4:20.36.
In the 500 Free, sophomore Shannon Hackett improved her season best and 'B' qualifier to 4:51.45 for fourth place, and Imagane improved to 4:53.12 for fifth.
In the 200 Medley Relay, Arnold, senior Eileen Seissen, Thurman and freshman Anna Poteete finished second, swimming a season best time of 1:40.59. The 400 Free Relay also placed second, as Vandenberg, sohpomore Katherine Wong, Arnold and Poteete swam 3:24.17.
Over at Sunset Recreation Center, the Bruins took second, third, and fourth-place on both the one meter and three meter boards. Senior Paige Thompson led UCLA with two second-place finishes. On 1M, Thompson posted a score of 273.60, and on 3M she scored 303.53. Freshman Marisa Samaniego was third on 1M (253.65) and fourth on 3M (251.25), while junior Sara Clark was fourth on 1M (238.72) and third on 3M (568.95).
Seven seniors were honored for their careers on Saturday as their eligibility as a Bruin has come to an end - Kendall Butler, Shellene Catalano, Krista Daley, Liz Keating, Eileen Seissen, Paige Thompson and Kim Vandenberg. It was also the final home meet for team manager Kirill Fayerman, who will be graduating this Spring.
