No. 7 Cal Opens Season with 14-5 Win Over Oklahoma State

SAN DIEGO - The No. 7 California softball team started off the 2006 season with a win, defeating Oklahoma State 14-5 at the Campbell/Cartier Tournament hosted by San Diego State.
The Golden Bears (1-0) got on the board first, Friday, scoring twice in the first inning and three runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead. The Cowgirls (0-2) answered, tying up the game at 5-5 in the top of the third.
Senior Lindsay James came through for the Bears in the bottom of the third, scoring sophomores Erika Racklin and Julie Meyer on a two-run single. Cal tallied seven runs over the next three innings to wrap up the win, including a two-run home run from senior Haley Woods in the sixth.
Senior All-American Kristina Thorson earned the win, striking out 10 over six innings while giving up six hits.
James went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Woods finished 2-for-4 with four RBI, and Racklin scored four runs.
The Cal-Oklahoma State game was originally scheduled for 7 p.m., but the first pitch wasn't thrown until 8:28. The six-inning contest lasted for two hours, fifty-two minutes.
The Bears were scheduled to face San Diego State following the Oklahoma State game Friday, but because of the length of Friday's games, the Cal-SDSU contest will be postponed until 8 a.m. on Sunday.
Cal continues tournament play Saturday when the Bears face Cal Poly at 1 p.m. and UC Santa Barbara at 5 p.m.
