No. 7 Stanford Falls To No. 4 Texas, 2-0

Phoenix, Ariz. - No. 7 Stanford fell to No. 4 Texas, 2-0, today in the final game for the Cardinal at the Kajikawa Classic. Both teams went through four innings scoreless until Texas' Anna Hall scored on Rachael Cook's RBI single. Freshman pitcher Missy Penna struck out five batters in her third game in the circle for Stanford.
Stanford and Texas completed the first four innings of the game without a run. Senior Catalina Morris got on base in the first inning with a single up the middle, but the Longhorns' Cat Osterman struck out two batters to bring Texas to the plate. Texas got on base with a line drive single by Jacqueline Williams, but sophomore Michelle Smith caught a line drive to third to end the inning.
Texas's Amber Hall reached first base in the fifth inning on an error and advanced to second. Hall was then kocked to third base on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice squeeze to put the Longhorns up, 1-0, at the end of the fifth. In the sixth inning, Jacqueline Williams got on base for Texas with a single to left field, followed by a single from Chez Sievers to advance pinch runner Brittany Reliford, in for Williams. Hall then hit an RBI double to center field to score Reliford. Penna struck out two batters and the inning ended with Texas up, 2-0.
Penna got on base for the Cardinal in the top of the seventh with a line drive to third base and senior Shoney Hixson came in to pinch run for Penna. Junior Jackie Rinehart connected with a hit over Osterman's head and reached on a fielder's choice, with Hixson advancing on an error. With runners on first and second, Osterman struck out the last two batters to end the game.
Stanford closed out the Kajikawa Classic with four wins and one loss. Freshman Maddy Coon hammered two home runs in her first tournament for the Cardinal. Morris tallied five RBI and one home run for the weekend with a .444 average. Penna struck out 24 batters in three games and ended the weekend, 2-1.
The Cardinal will be back in action next weekend as it hosts the Stanford Invitational, featuring Santa Clara, Drake, Birmingham Southern and Sacramento State. Stanford opens up the tournament versus Santa Clara on Friday, February 17 (1:30pm), followed by Drake at 3:30pm.
