Softball Defeats San Diego State, 2-1

SAN DIEGO - UCLA softball played its closest game of the 2006 season, prevailing by a score of 2-1 over Campbell/Cartier Tournament host San Diego State. In a combined effort in the circle, Lisa Dodd struck out three and Anjelica Selden struck out nine while Jodie Legaspi went 3-for-4 offensively in the game.
The Aztecs opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning on a rally that started with a one-out single by Taryin Casillas. Casillas would go to second on a groundout and came home on a single just over the head of Bruin 2B Caitlin Benyi by Allison Smith to give San Diego State the lead.
UCLA came to bat in the top of the third as Ashley Herrera led off with a single and was replaced at the bag by Tara Henry, who hit into a fielders choice. An Andrea Duran bloop single that dropped just behind the third baseman for a hit. Krista Colburn then connected on an RBI single to score Henry and tie the game at 1-1. The Bruins were threatening to extend the lead on a ball ripped up the middle by Caitlin Benyi, but it hit Aztec starting pitcher Melissa Owens, went up in the air and was caught by SDSU first baseman before hitting the ground. Duran was doubled off of second base on the bizarre play to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Bruins led off the inning on an Emily Zaplatosch single up the middle. She was replaced by pinch runner Alissa Eno, who went to third base on a double to the wall by Jodie Legaspi. Eno would score on a single to right by Whitney Holum to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead. UCLA went on to load the bases but was unable to push an additional run across in the inning.
Thee Bruins return to action on Wednesday evening with a 6 pm first pitch against Long Beach State. The game will take place at Mayfair Park in Lakewood, Calif.
