Husky Golfers in 11th Place at Regional Challenge

Feb. 13, 2006

Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Washington women's golf team opened its spring season today by shooting 28-over 312 to tie for 11th at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club. Arizona State, the nation's ninth-ranked team, carded a first round 293 and owns a three-stroke lead over California and USC. The Huskies share 11th place with Arizona.

The Huskies were led by junior Amber Prange, who shot 2-over 73 and is tied for eighth, three strokes behind the leaders. Arizona State's Jennifer Osborn, California's Sophia Sheridan and UCLA's Susie Mathews share the lead at 1-under 70.

'She's been working hard,' said Washington head coach Mary Lou Mulflur of Prange. 'It doesn't surprise me at all that she did well. It wasn't easy today - you could see that most of the scores were pretty high - and she played really solid.'

Two-time All-American Paige Mackenzie shot 6-over 77 to finish 33rd after the first round. Sung Ea Lee carded a 7-over 78 to take 40th. Ashley Bickerton's 13-over 84 was good for 75th, while Kim Shin's 20-over 91 placed her in 79th.

'I'm proud of Sung Ea Lee,' Mulflur said. 'She battled really hard out there. Paige Mackenzie drove the ball well, but she was a just a little off today. It was our first tournament in a while, so we were all a little off, but we'll get it going.'

The second round of the Regional Challenge is scheduled for Tuesday and the final 18 holes will be played Wednesday. Live scoring of the tournament is available at golfstat.com.
