No. 21 Cal Tied for 2nd After 1st Round of Northrop Grumman Challenge

PALOS VERDES, Calif. - No. 21 California is tied with No. 8 USC for second place after the opening day of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Monday at Palos Verdes Golf Club. No. 9 Arizona State sits atop the leader board at nine-over 293, while the Golden Bears and Women of Troy are knotted at 296.
Thirteen of the 15 teams competing at the tournament are ranked in the top 25 nationally and five are in the top 10. No. 2 UCLA and No. 11 Wake Forest are tied for fourth at 301 after today's round.
Cal senior Sophia Sheridan, who is coming off a victory at the Mexican Amateur, is in a three-way tie for first at one-under 70. UCLA's Susie Matthews and Arizona State's Jennifer Osborn share top honors with Sheridan.
Bears senior Sofie Andersson sits in a four-way tie for fourth place at one-over 72, and Cal freshman Allison Goodman is tied for 11th at 74. Junior Mika Takyama fired an 80 (T56th) for the Bears' final counting score.
Freshman Shannon Yocum, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 40th with a score of 78.
The second of three rounds tees off Tuesday at 9 a.m. PT. The Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge is the first competition of the spring for Cal.
