Feb. 13, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - University of Washington senior Brandon Roy, who led the Huskies to their first regular-season sweep of the Los Angeles schools in 19 years, was named the Pacific-10 Conference men's basketball Player of the Week, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Monday.
Roy averaged 22.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists, helping the Huskies improve their record to 18-5 overall and 7-5 in conference competition. He converted 13-of-26 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 attempts from 3-point range.
The 6-foot-6 guard posted his fourth double-double of the season on Thursday with 25 points and 11 rebounds as the Huskies defeated USC 87-73.
On Saturday, Roy registered his fifth straight 20-point game in UW's 70-67 victory over 13th-ranked UCLA. The Huskies have won three consecutive games against UCLA for the first time since 1952.
Roy tallied 20 points and seven assists against the Bruins. He blocked two shots, including Jordan Farmar's game-tying 3-point attempt at the final buzzer.
Washington completed its first regular-season sweep of UCLA since 1987 which is also the last time it swept both the Bruins and USC during the same year.
One of 30 remaining candidates for the Wooden Award and Naismith Trophy honoring the national player of the year, Roy leads all Pac-10 scorers during conference play. His 22.6-point average is nearly four points higher than the league's No. 2 scorer during Pac-10 games.
This is the second Pac-10 Player of the Week award for Roy who previously received the honor on Feb. 28, 2004. He is the second Husky to receive the conference's weekly award this season, joining Jan. 16 recipient Bobby Jones.
The two home victories moved Washington up in the national rankings released Monday. The Huskies rose one spot to No. 20 in the Associated Press poll and climbed from 23rd to No. 21 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll.
Washington embarks on a two-game road trip this week, beginning Thursday, Feb. 16 at Oregon. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. at McArthur Court for the game that airs live on FSN Northwest. On Saturday, Feb. 18, the Huskies visit Oregon State's Gill Coliseum. FSN Northwest will televise that game live at 7 p.m.
