CONFERENCE WEEKLY NOTES (2/13)
TITLE HOPES: The Pac-10 title picture could become a bit clearer this weekend, as the No. 1 and 2 teams in the Conference go head-to-head as STANFORD travels to Tempe to take on ARIZONA STATE in a Thurs., Feb. 16 battle ... In first-round action earlier this season, the Cardinal used a second-half rally to defeat the Sun Devils, 84-78, at Maples Pavilion behind 33 points from SO G Candice Wiggins ... UCLA, tied for fourth a week ago and now in sole possession of third place in the Conference, will host cross-town rival USC on Sat., Feb. 18, in hopes of bettering its Tournament seed ... The right for LA bragging rights will be televised on FSN at 1 p.m. ... CALIFORNIA's matchup with Arizona State on Sat., Feb. 18, will also be televised on FSN, tip-off at 4 p.m. MT, 3 p.m. PT ... ASU will be looking for a series split as the Bears took round one, 66-64, at Haas Pavilion in mid-January.
WHO'S GOT THE HOT HANDS: This week's look at who's hot: As has been the case for quite some time now, UCLA JR G Noelle Quinn is staking her claim as one of the top guards in the nation ... After averaging 19 points per game on 16-of-31 shooting over the weekend, Quinn guided the Bruins to a weekend sweep of the Washington schools ... She has scored 20 or more points in seven of her last eight games, while helping UCLA to a 6-2 record in those contests ... Quinn is averaging 18.3 ppg this season to rank third in the Pac-10 ... OREGON STATE SR F Kim Butler averaged 23 points on the weekend as the Beavers split their series with the Arizona's ... Butler has led the team in scoring 15 games this season, including the past seven straight ... WASHINGTON STATE SR F Keisha Moore nearly averaged a double-double over two games last week, recording 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds a game ... Moore has scored in double figures in five of the last six games.
500 AND COUNTING: Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer recorded her 500th win at the helm of the Cardinal program with a 55-46 victory over Bay Area rival California on Sat., Feb. 11 in Berkeley ... It was also VanDerveer's 652nd win all-time ... In 20 seasons at Stanford, VanDerveer has amassed an impressive 500-125 (.800) record to rank among the top coaches in women's basketball history ... In other coaching milestones, WASHINGTON head coach June Daugherty recorded her 100th Pac-10 win with a 87-79 double overtime thriller against USC on Thurs., Feb. 9.
BLUE NOMINATED: UCLA SR G Nikki Blue was one of 11 nominees for the Nancy Lieberman Award, announced on Friday ... The award to honor the nation's top point guard is chosen by a panel of national sportswriters ... Blue, who leads the Pac-10 in assists with an average of 5.38 per game, ranks No. 3 on UCLA's all-time assists charts with 542 over her career ... She needs just two more assists to tie Ann Meyers for second place ... Blue is averaging 13.3 points per game and leads the Pac-10 with a three-point field goal percentage of 44.8.
ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS: Five Pac-10 players were named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-America team, including Stanford's SR G Krista Rappahahn and UCLA JR G Noelle Quinn to the first team ... Washington JR G Cameo Hicks placed on the second team, while Oregon State SR G Mandy Close and UCLA SO F Lindsey Pluimer were named to the third team.
TOURNAMENT TIME: The 2006 State Farm Pac-10 Tournament will take place March 3-6 at the HP Pavilion at San Jose, the winner receiving the Pac-10's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament ... Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster by calling (408) 998-8497 or through the Pac-10 website at www.pac-10.org.

FR G Kelsey Burns posted a career-high 19 points, while grabbing nine rebounds in a spectacular performance that helped UA get back in the game ... The Sun Devils are in sole possession of second place as they return home to Wells Fargo Arena where they are undefeated on the year (12-0) to host Stanford on Thurs., Feb. 16 and California on Sat., Feb. 18 ... ASU is looking for a little vindication as it was swept by the Bay Area schools in first-round action earlier this season ... FR G Briann January is improving with each game in her first collegiate season ... She leads the team with a 1.4 steal average, while tying for fourth on the team with a 2.4 assist average ... January is just one of many who come off the bench for ASU in a deep and steady rotation ...
