Bruins to Host No. 6 Cal, No. 1 Stanford This Week

No. 17 UCLA Hosts Two Top-10 Opponents This Week . . .
The 17th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team (4-1) faces its two highest-ranked opponents of the season this week, hosting No. 6 Cal (6-1) this Friday at 1:30 p.m. and top-ranked Stanford (7-0) on Saturday at Noon. Both matches are at the Los Angeles Tennis Center and will not count in the Pac-10 standings. UCLA swept the Golden Bears last year, taking a 30-22 lead in the all-time series. Stanford enters the week with a 63-match winning streak. The Bruins' last win over the Cardinal was a 5-4 upset at the LATC back in 1998. Bruins Suffer First Loss of the Season at Pepperdine . . .
After beginning the season with four consecutive 7-0 victories, the Bruins suffered their first loss of the season last Saturday, falling to No. 25 Pepperdine, 4-3 in Malibu. UCLA lost the doubles point and fell just short in singles play, winning three matches, as Laura Gordon, Tracy Lin and Ashley Joelson were all victorious.
In the Fila ITA Rankings . . .
UCLA checks in at No. 17 in the latest Fila ITA Rankings released on Feb. 14. The Bruins, who have been ranked as high as No. 11 this year, dropped two spots from No. 15 after their loss to Pepperdine. Stanford is the No. 1 team, followed by Florida, Texas, USC and Duke. Individually, Alex McGoodwin is ranked No. 77 in singles. She is followed by No. 96 Laura Gordon and No. 99 Ashley Joelson. The Bruins currently do not have any doubles teams ranked. New team and individual rankings will be released again on Feb. 22.
Gordon Leading by Example . . .
As the lone senior on this year's team, captain Laura Gordon is making the most of her final season of college tennis. Gordon has been the most consistent player during the first part of the season, posting a 16-3 overall record, including a 3-0 mark in dual-match play at the No. 2 position. She and teammate Riza Zalameda have also been impressive in doubles play, posting a 5-0 record at the No. 1 position.
Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster . . .
Stella Sampras Webster is in her 10th season as the head coach of the UCLA women's tennis team. She owns a career record of 153-84 (.646). In her first nine seasons at UCLA, Sampras Webster guided the Bruins to eight top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including five top-5 showings (1997, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004). In 2004, she led UCLA to the NCAA Finals for the first time since 1991. It also marked the first time since 1991 that the Bruins surpassed the 20-win mark, finishing with a 21-8 overall record.
