No. 25 USC Wins 16-11 Slugfest Against UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Daniel Perales (Orange/Mater Dei HS) and Cyle Hankerd (Covina/South Hills HS) had three RBI each Tuesday as the No. 25 USC Trojans won their fifth straight game with a 16-11 victory over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. The game was called after eight innings due to darkness.
USC (5-3) opened an 8-0 lead against UCSB after Hankerd hit his third home run in the past two games with a three-run shot to left in the second. Hankerd, who was named today Pac-10 Conference Player of the Week, has opened the 2006 season with an eight-game hitting streak. He is batting .500 (16-for-32) with three home runs and 15 RBI.
It was a sloppy pitching performance by both teams with a combined 17 walks and seven hit batters.
UCSB (2-3) rallied with two runs in the second and five in the third, cutting the deficit to one run. With the tying run at third, USC reliever John Dunn (1-0) retired Robbie Blauer on a fly out. Dunn then held the Gauchos in check with 3 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory. The Trojans put the game away with eight unanswered runs.
USC hosts the 2006 Public Storage Baseball Classic this weekend (Feb. 17-19) at Dedeaux Field. The tournament field features Kansas, Vanderbilt and No. 15 San Diego. Vanderbilt plays San Diego on Friday at 2 p.m. with USC taking on Kansas at 6 p.m. All three USC games will be broadcast live, along with live streaming video, on usctrojans.com.
