PAC-10 SQUADS HAVING EARLY TOURNAMENT SUCCESS

Non-conference tournament play is underway for Pac-10 squads ... the Conference has all eight teams ranked in the USA Softball/ESPN.com Top-25, with four schools in the Top-10 ... UCLA remains at No. 2, while ARIZONA moves up to No. 3 and CALIFORNIA and STANFORD sit at No. 6 and 7, respectively ... WASHINGTON and OREGON STATE rank 11th and 12th, while ARIZONA STATE and OREGON emerged onto the Top-25 after receiving votes in the preseason poll at 23rd and 24th ... the Pac-10 is the only Conference with all teams in the Top-25 ... the Pac-10 garnered a 37-5 (.881) record against non-conference foes over the weekend, and outscored their opponents 267-74 ... Conference teams were also 7-3 against ranked opponents ... Arizona's Alicia Hollowell was named the USA Softball Player of the Week for Feb. 6-12.

TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES

ARIZONA (6-0):
The Wildcats defeated three teams ranked in the Top-15 during their opening weekend (4/4 Texas, 9/6 Texas A&M, 16/15 Northwestern) ... pitcher Alicia Hollowell (3-0) opened her senior campaign with two no-hitters against ranked opponents (Northwestern and Texas A&M), and tossed a one-hitter to Cal State Northridge ... Hollowell and sophomore hurler Taryne Mowatt (3-0) combined for 68 strikeouts in their first six games, more than twice the amount thrown by their opponents (29) ... the pitching staff threw 26.1 innings before any opponent crossed home plate, while the Wildcats scored 34 runs in that time ... freshman Laine Roth led the `Cats with a .615 batting average, while fellow newcomer Sam Banister knocked in two home runs and nine RBI in her collegiate debut ... over six games, Arizona outscored their opponents 36-1.

ARIZONA STATE (7-0): The Sun Devils won their Kajikawa Tournament, outscoring their opponents 50-7 ... ASU hit 11 home runs and was 20-for-20 in stolen base attempts on the weekend ... senior Desiree Serrano (4-0) threw 29 strikeouts and one no-hitter while opening her senior campaign 4-0 ... Serrano leads the Pac-10 with four wins ... the Sun Devils held their opponents to a .140 batting average on 57 total strikeouts ... freshman Kaitlin Cochran had an outstanding collegiate debut, hitting .542 with four home runs, two triples, no strikeouts and 20 RBI (the ASU season record for RBI is 58) ... she and senior Jen McCard also notched grand slams over the weekend ... Cochran was also named Pac-10 Player of the Week ... ASU run-ruled five of the seven opponents played in the tournament.

CALIFORNIA (4-0): The Golden Bears rallied for three come-from-behind victories in their four wins at the Campbell/Cartier Tournament ... senior pitcher Kristina Thorson went 3-0 with a save on the weekend, striking out 15 batters over 15.0 innings ... freshman Carly Winger hit .417 with a clutch home run that led Cal over UC Santa Barbara ... when Cal rallied to beat Cal Poly on Saturday, Winger had a key single that led to the Bear's winning run ... trailing Massachusetts 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Cal used clutch hitting from sophomore Katie Vickers and freshman Morgan Siegel to send the game into extra innings ... sophomore Erika Racklin scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth ... the Golden Bears outscored their opponents 23-9 on the weekend.

OREGON (4-1): Oregon is tied for second in the conference with 10 doubles and leads the league with four fielding double plays ... senior shortstop Breanne Sabol hit two home runs to lead the Ducks to a 5-4 upset of then-No. 19 Florida ... she finished the weekend with a .444 batting average and a .778 slugging percentage, and scored at least one run in four of Oregon's five games ... senior pitcher Amy Harris (2-0) had 14 strikeouts in 16.1 innings pitched, giving up just two earned runs and finishing the weekend with a 0.86 ERA ... Ann Marie Topps is tied for the Pac-10 lead with a 1.000 on-base percentage ... sophomore Kristi Jorgensen's deep fly ball to center field scored two runs and broke a 1-1 eighth inning tie to lead Oregon over Kansas on Sunday.

STANFORD (4-1): Two freshmen (Missy Penna and Maddy Coon) hit home runs in Stanford's season-opening win over then-No. 21/22 Nebraska ... Penna (2-1) also picked up the win during that game, one of her two victories during the weekend ... she tallied 24 strikeouts in 18.0 innings pitched, including a 13-strikeout performance against Nevada, just three shy of Stanford's single-game record ... senior Catalina Morris leads the team with a .444 batting average after five games, tallying five runs and five RBI ... senior Laura Severson (1-0) ranks fourth in the league with a .125 opponent batting average ... Stanford pitchers held their opponents to a .223 clip ... the Cardinal ranks third in the Conference with a .976 fielding percentage ... Stanford outscored their opponents 26-8, and out-hit them 43-27.

OREGON STATE (3-2): Senior Adrienne Alo went 7-for-16 (.438) and led the team with five runs scored, six RBI and a pair of home runs in OSU's five games ... she moved into sole possession of second place on the OSU career home run list with her 28 bombs, and needs just six more runs scored to become the all-time leader ... the Beavers dropped back-to-back games to open the season for the first time since the 1995 campaign, but has also not ever faced back-to-back Top-25 opponents to open the season ... the Beavers tallied a school-record 19 hits against Utah State ... junior hurler Ta'Tyana McElroy (1-1) amassed a career-high 10 strikeouts in a complete game victory over Utah State ... 2005 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year Brianne McGowan (2-1) struck out eight batters en route to a 7-5 win over Cal State Fullerton.

UCLA (4-0): The Bruins set four offensive school records in their opener, with 22 runs scored, 21 RBI, 14 walks, and a 12-run fourth inning ... UCLA has a .443 team batting average with 54 runs scored, 49 RBI and 22 extra-base hits to go with four run rule victories ... sophomore Anjelica Selden (2-0) pitched 15.0 innings with 34 strikeouts, one walk, three hits and a 0.00 ERA ... the Bruins lead the Conference in batting average (.443), slugging percentage (.693), on-base percentage (.532), doubles (14) and triples (3) ... Emily Zaplotsch and Jodie Legaspi both hit .500 over the weekend ... Andrea Duran's two triples allowed her to pass four Olympians on UCLA's all-time list to move into a tie for fourth on the list ... the Bruins currently have 12 multi-hit player games, a mark that was not reached until the 16th game of the 2005 season.

WASHINGTON (4-1): The Huskies won the UNLV Alexis Resort Kickoff Classic to open their 2006 campaign ... freshman Marnie Koziol hit .700 (7-for-10) with four runs scored and one stolen base ... also had a .700 slugging percentage and a .700 on-base percentage ... freshman Danielle Lawrie (3-0) struck out 31 batters during the opening games of her collegiate career, good for fourth in the league ... she also is tied for the league lead with 11 batters struck out looking ... freshman Ashlyn Watson knocked two home runs over the weekend, which ties her for second in the Conference ... senior Dominique Lastrapes is tied for ninth in the league with six runs scored and fifth with seven RBI ... Caitlin Noble struck out 11 in UW's win over Illinois-Chicago, holding the Flames to just three hits.
