Baseball Hosts Houston This Weekend

TEMPE, Ariz. -
The Sun Devils look to break their three-game losing streak when they take on the Houston
Cougars in a three-game series at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. ASU
went 0-3 last weekend in Suprise to drop their record to 5-4. They had been on a five-game
winning streak prior to their West Valley trek.
The Sun Devils vs. The Cougars:
ASU is 5-3 all-time when facing the Houston Cougars. They last met in 2002 during the
NCAA Tournament. ASU hosted the event at HoHoKam Park in Mesa where Houston was
the top seed. The Sun Devils dropped both meetings with the Cougars in the tournament,
falling 8-4 and 8-3. Houston last traveled to Tempe for a three-game set in 1980, which
Arizona State swept.
Surprised in Surprise:
Arizona State ended last weekend 0-3, the fi rst time they have failed to win a game at the
Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, Arizona. ASU dropped the opener to Gonzaga 9-1, were shut
out by Oregon State 11-0 in game two, and lost the final game 12-8 to Nevada. Gonzaga
finished the weekend 3-0, thanks to their dramatic 6-5 walk-off victory over the Beavers on
ASU fell out of both the Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America polls. They had been
ranked #10 in Collegiate Baseball and #16 by Baseball America. The Sun Devils are ranked
#23 in the NCBWA poll.
All Tournament Honors:
Despite the teams struggles in Surprise, 1B Willy Fox and C Preston Paramore
both earned slots on the Coca-Cola Classic All-Tournament Team. Fox went 6-11
(.545) over the weekend, including an RBI triple. He also played error-free first base.
Paramore was 4-9 (.444) drawing two walks and scoring a run. He also caught
all three games, taking a ton of punishment from foul balls over the course of the
Sophomore Willy Fox has been clutch at the plate for the Sun Devils so far in 2006.
Fox leads the team with a .429 batting average and with his eight runs batted in. His
two homers also are tops on the Devils.
Head Coach Pat Murphy hinted this week that the starting rotation would see some
changes. Ike Davis will stay as the Friday night starter while Pat Bresnehan will
most likely move back to the bullpen. Freshman Jeff Urlaub could get the start on
Saturday against Houston, with Murphy still undecided on Sundays starter.
