WSU Pounds Out 17 Hits In 11-3 Victory Over Hawaii-Hilo
Feb. 17, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - Jared Prince had four hits to lead a 17-hit Cougar attack while Nick Ison worked six strong innings on the mound as Washington State University posted an 11-3 victory over Hawaii-Hilo Friday afternoon at Wong Stadium.
With the win the Cougars improve to 6-1 on the season and will look to sweep the four-game series Saturday afternoon. The Vulcans fall to 2-11.
The Cougars wasted no time in putting the game in their favor, scoring six first-inning runs. With a run already in and runners at second and third, Prince drilled the first of two doubles on the day to left center, pushing the lead to 3-0. Jim Murphy followed with an RBI double and one out later, Mike Gilbert's two-run single capped the six-run, six-hit frame.
Hilo got one run back in the second courtesy of a single and two wild pitches, but WSU answered with three more in the third to put the game away. A Zach McAngus RBI single preceded a Matt Thomas two-run home run to left, making it 9-1 WSU.
That was more than enough for Ison. In his first start of the season, the junior scattered three hits, all singles, while allowing just one run as he improved to 2-0 on the young season. Ison walked just one while striking out six before Matt Way came on to work the final three innings. Way allowed two runs on two hits with three strikeouts in his second appearance of the season.
In the sixth Jeff Miller connected for his team-leading third home run of the season, a solo shot to left, while Murphy's RBI single in the ninth plating Paul Gran closed out the scoring. The Vulcans pushed across two runs in their half of the eighth on a throwing error by Jeff Miller and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tyler Curtis.
WSU continued its mastery of Hilo pitching as the Cougars have connected for 52 hits in the first three games, hitting a gaudy .406 as a team. Prince led the way Friday with four hits, including two doubles and two RBIs, while McAngus added three hits and Jay Miller, Gran and Murphy each added two.
These same two teams conclude their four-game series with a single game Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. HST (3 p.m. PST).
