TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 57 ASU Men's Tennis team drops its first match of the season to No. 45 Texas A&M 3-4 this Saturday at Whitemen Tennis Center. The Sun Devils are now 4-1 in the season.
The Devils got off to a great start by winning two of three doubles matches to win the doubles point. The Sun Devils have not yet lost a doubles point this season. Playing at the No. 3 spot, Nick Hegarty and Wesley Miller handily defeated their opponents Jose Zunino and Jose Ycaza 8-1. T.J. Bellama and Mike Beatty followed the suit by winning a hard fought match 9-7 to secure the doubles point at number two against the Islanders Raul Morant-Rivas and Sharon Henselijin. The number one spot was equally as hard fought as the team of Ryan McBride and Jonathan Kinsella fell short of a victory as they dropped their match 7-9 against Andrey Kumantsov and Mikhail Pavlov.
Number one singles player, McBride, retired early due to an injury to give the Islanders their first point. The number two spot was the hardest fought match of the day as Kinsella battled Kumantsov. Kinsella dropped his first set 4-6 but came back in an exciting second set as he beat Kumantsov 7-6 (2). He was narrowly defeated in his third set 4-6. Kumantsov won the match 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-4.
Playing at the number three spot Chris Biro won his match against Pavlov in two sets 6-1, 6-1. After fighting back to win his second set Miller was narrowly defeated by Zunino 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in the #4 spot.
Hegarty easily swept his opponent, Ycaza at the number five spot as he won his match in two sets 6-0, 6-0. Playing at the number six spot, Beatty came back to win his second set but fell short in a loss to Texas A&M's Henselijin.
The Sun Devils continue their weekend at home as they take on #28 Auburn tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the Whitemen Center in Tempe, Ariz.
