LOS ANGELES - The second-ranked UCLA softball team posted a 2-0 victory over No. 22/25 Fresno State on Saturday afternoon at Easton Stadium in the team's 2006 home opener. Junior pitcher Lisa Dodd struck out 10 batters, pitching a two-hit shutout, and connected on a two-run home run to lead UCLA to the victory.

Fresno State threatened first, as Nichole Willis led off the second inning with a walk, advancing to second base on an error that put Robin Mackin on first base. Bruins pitcher Lisa Dodd took over from that point. Striking out the next three batters to end the inning and the threat. At the conclusion of two defensive innings, Dodd had record five of a possible six outs via strikeout.

In the bottom half of the frame, designated player Emily Zaplaotsch led off with a single straight up the middle before being replaced by pinch runner Alissa Eno. Eno advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jodie Legaspi went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a home run by Dodd, a shot to left center field for her second homer of the season.

UCLA threatened again in the bottom of the third inning as the Bruins loaded the bases on singles by Zaplatosch, Dodd and Jaisa Creps but were unable to capitalize, leaving the score with a 2-0 UCLA advantage.

That score would hold as Dodd completed a two-hit day in the circle. She struck out 10 batters, including the final two of the game, as she improved to 3-0 on the young season.

The Bruins and Bulldogs return to action on Sunday at Easton Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
