Vanderbilt Defeats No. 25 USC, 6-2, In Day Two At Public Storage Classic

LOS ANGELES --- Left fielder Matt Meingasner hit a two-run single and started a key double play in the fifth Saturday as the Vanderbilt Commodores defeated the No. 25 USC Trojans, 6-2, in day two action at the 2006 Public Storage Classic at Dedeaux Field. San Diego defeated Kansas, 17-6, in earlier action.
The Commodores snapped USC's six-game win streak.
Meingasner caught a fly ball in foul territory and threw a strike to catcher Brian Hernandez, who tagged out USC's Blake Sharpe from third in the fifth.
Matt Buschmann (1-0) earned the win for Vanderbilt (1-1) after allowing two runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Vanderbilt scored five runs in the third off freshman starter Ryan Cook (0-1), who hit one batter and walked two, including one with the bases loaded.
USC reliever John Dunn (Torrance/West HS) threw a perfect three innings in relief for the Trojans, which falls to 6-4 on the season.
Cyle Hankerd (Covina/South Hills HS) went 3-for-5 with an RBI while Blake Sharpe had a 2-for-4 night as both players extended their season-opening streaks to 10 games. Hankerd is batting a torrid .524 (22-for-42) with three home runs and 19 RBI.
Tomorrow's action begins at noon with Kansas facing Vanderbilt while USC and San Diego will finish the tournament with a 4 p.m. start. Gametracker live stats will be available for both games on usctrojans.com. USC's game will be broadcast live, along with live video streaming.
