No. 17 Bruins Upset No. 6 Cal, 4-3
Feb. 19, 2006
LOS ANGELES - In a match that was decided by a third set at No. 6 singles, the 17th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team picked up its biggest upset of the season Sunday, defeating sixth-ranked Cal, 4-3 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the victory, UCLA improves to 5-2 on the year. The Golden Bears fall to 6-3.
Sunday's match was actually rescheduled from Friday, when rain halted play after the Bruins took a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point. In addition, the Bruins had taken the first set in three singles matches when play was suspended.
UCLA entered the day knowing it needed just three singles wins to pull off the upset. Bruin sophomore Tracy Lin was the first to finish, giving UCLA a 2-0 lead when she downed 83rd-ranked Claire Ilcinkas, 6-0, 6-1 at court No. 3. After the Golden Bears took a straight-set win at court No. 2, the Bruins came right back to take a 3-1 advantage when 77th-ranked Alex McGoodwin posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jessica Shu at court No. 4.
The Golden Bears, however, would take the next two matches in straight sets to tie it up at 3-3. All eyes then turned to court No. 6, where UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin and Cal's Bojana Bobusic were battling in a third set. After winning the first set 6-2 on Friday, Lumpkin lost the second set 6-3. She stayed focused, however, breezing to a 6-1 third set win to give UCLA the 4-3 victory.
UCLA hits the road next week, heading to Arizona and Arizona State.
