Sun Devil Gymnasts Finish in Second Place at UCLA

LOS ANGELES - The No. 12 Arizona State women's gymnastics team finished in second place (194.575) in a quad-meet on Sunday, which included No. 9 UCLA, Cal State Fullerton and UC Davis. The host Bruins took first place in the meet with a 196.675, while Cal State Fullerton (189.8) and UC Davis (187.925) took third and fourth place, respectively.
The Bruins won all four events and had the top two finishers - senior Kate Richardson (39.55) and freshman Kristina Comforte (39.45) - in the all-around competition. Leading ASU in the all-around were senior Ashley Kelley (39.35) and junior April Boone (39.325), who finished in third and fourth place, respectively.
The Sun Devils began the meet on the uneven bars where they scored a 48.725. Leading ASU in the event was Kelly, who scored a 9.85 and finished in fourth place. Right behind Kelly was freshman Nicole Harris, who scored a 9.8 and finished in seventh place. Also contributing to ASU's bars score were Boone and senior Lauren Powell, who both scored a 9.775 to finish tied for eighth place; and freshman Tiana Jean, who added a 9.525.
ASU moved to the balance beam for its second rotation where it scored a 48.45. A pair of falls by Harris (9.35) and junior Cassandra Jusino (9.25) forced the Sun Devils to have to count a 9.35 in their beam score. Kelly again paced the Sun Devils, scoring a 9.85, which tied her for first place in the meet. Boone added a 9.8, which tied her second-highest beam score of the season and tied her for fourth place in the meet. Scoring a 9.7 or higher in the event for ASU were freshman Ashlee Hinkle (9.75) and Powell (9.7).
The Sun Devils next went to the floor exercise where they posted a 48.4.Boone led ASU in the event scoring a 9.85 and finishing in third place. Also coming through with a solid routine was Kelly, who added a 9.8 and finished tied for sixth place. The Sun Devils also counted scores from freshman Ashley Toner (9.6), Hinkle (9.575) and sophomore Karissa Vossler (9.575). Vossler's routine was her first official one of the season after doing an exhibition routine last week against Stanford.
ASU would come through with its best performance of the meet in the final rotation, scoring a 49.0 on the vault. Three gymnasts scored a 9.825 or higher led by Boone, who took top honors in the meet by tying her career-best score (9.9) in the event. Coming in tied for fourth place was Kelly, who scored a 9.85. Right behind Kelly was Harris, who scored a 9.825 and finished tied for sixth place. Powell (9.775) and Hinkle (9.65) rounded out the counting scores for ASU.
The Sun Devils return to action next Friday night when they host the UNO's Classic (vs. Oregon State, Boise State and UW-Oshkosh) at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe.
